Chapter 30-1
Chapter 30-1
(Sophia’s POV)
I haven’t stopped crying since Sabrina walked out my door three hours ago.
My face is swollen. My eyes burn. My chest feels like someone’s sitting on it.
I fucked up. I fucked up so badly.
I was trying to help. That’s all I’ve ever tried to do. But somehow, I made everything worse.

My phone sits on the coffee table, silent now. Sabrina stopped answering two hours ago. All my calls go straight to voicemail. My texts aren’t even showing as read.
She blocked me.
My best friend blocked me.
“What do I do?” I say to my empty apartment. “What the hell do I do?”
I’ve been asking myself that question on repeat since she left, and I still don’t have an answer.
Call Richard? He’ll just tell me to give her space, that she needs time to cool down.
Go to the hotel where she’s staying? Except I don’t know which hotel. And if I did, she’d probably call security.
Break down and eat an entire pint of ice cream while watching sad movies? Already did that.
I grab my phone and scroll through my contacts. There has to be someone who can help. Someone who can fix this.
My finger hovers over Jason’s name. Though I’m the one who orchestrated this entire trip, I can’t help feeling he’s the one who got us into this mess.
Why couldn’t he keep Sabrina from finding out the truth until the trip was over and she was home? I would’ve talked to her alone, told her everything in person, then maybe, maybe… things wouldn’t have turned out so bad.
I hit call before I can talk myself out of it.
He answers on the second ring. “Sophia?”
“We have a problem.”
“I know. Sabrina won’t answer my calls either.”
“It’s worse than that.” I take a shaky breath. “She left my apartment. She’s staying in some hotel

with Jake. She quit the job at Phoenix. She wants nothing to do with me.”
Silence on the other end. Then: “Shit.”

“Shit is right. She’s not just pissed. She’s furious. The last time I saw her this angry was….” Senior
year.
Right before we graduated.
Fuck!
That showdown hadn’t gone well. I remember the reason she got angry was because of the guy I was dating back then. He got me pregnant…and…disappeared.
When Sabrina found out, she almost turned the entire campus upside down trying to hunt him
down.
She didn’t manage to find him, of course.
But she made damn sure he never showed his face in the city again.
“Where is she staying?”
“I don’t know. Some budget place, probably. She doesn’t have a lot of money.” My voice cracks. “She’s out there alone with Jake, and it’s all my fault.”
“It’s not your fault-”
“Yes, it is!” I’m shouting now, angry tears streaming down my face. “I pushed her into this! I thought I was helping, but I was just making her feel weak and dependent and now she’s so determined to prove she doesn’t need anyone that she’s willing to lose everything!”
“Sophia-”
“You don’t understand, Jason! This never happened before! My best friend hates me! She blocked my number! She refused to work at my company! And now, she’s going to lose custody of her son because of the videos we took!” I’m sobbing now, ugly and raw. “I was trying to help her move on from Dustin. I wanted her to be happy again. But I just made everything worse.”
Jason doesn’t say anything for a long moment. I can hear him breathing on the other end, thinking.
“Okay,” he finally says. “We can still fix this. What she needs now is a job. Do you have a way to keep track of the companies she visits?”
“No, but if I can talk to Jake. It’s possible. But Sabrina will be even more furious if she finds out. She made it very clear she wants nothing to do with us.”
“Making sure she wins Jake’s custody is more important than facing her anger now.”
