Chapter 90-1
(Sophia’s POV)
Work is such a pain in the butt today.
I’ve been staring at spreadsheets and financial projections for so long my eyes feel like they’re going to fall out of my head. Numbers blur together. Profit margins. Revenue streams. Market expansion opportunities. It’s all important, necessary stuff for running a multi-million dollar cosmetics company.
But God, it’s boring.
The one bright spot-the only thing getting me through this endless parade of documents-is knowing I get to pick up Jake from school when I’m done.
Without a doubt, that boy is the highlight of my day, the joy in my living.
I can have the worst day imaginable-shipments delayed, clients being difficult, employees calling in sick -and the second I see Jake’s face everything turns bright and cheerful.
Plus, he’s hilarious.
After that livestream where he defended his art and shut down Jessica’s accusations, he made another
video. One that only he and I know about.
I’m scrolling through my phone now, pulling it up for probably the hundredth today.
Jake’s sitting in Sabrina’s living room, arms crossed, looking smugger than any five-year-old has a right to
look.
“Mean lady Jessica, you can tell me the truth. I already know your secret. I know why you’re picking on me and mom.” he says to the camera. “It’s because you’re jealous. You stole my bad dad away, but I found myself a new dad who is better than bad dad. And mom found a shiny shoe protector who loves her more than bad dad. So mean lady Jessica, I know you’re jealous, now because you’re stuck with bad dad while mom and I live happily ever after. I bet that makes you mad, doesn’t it?”

The kid’s emotional intelligence is terrifying.
I laugh every time I watch this video and want to post it so bad my hands tremble. I can already see it going viral, getting millions of views, making Jessica’s life even more miserable.
But Sabrina would kill me if she finds out.
She’s all about raising Jake “right.” Teaching him values. Making sure he understands that talking about people behind their backs is wrong even when those people are garbage humans who deserve to be
called out.
So the video stays private. On my phone. Where I can watch it whenever I need to brighten my day.
But that doesn’t stop me from imagining the chaos it would cause if it ever went public.

Lolose yut of the video and check the time two fifteen. Time to wrap up and head to the school.
t make my rounds through the office, making sure everyone’s logged off properly, that all the sensitive documents are locked up, that the building’s locked and secure.
Running a company means being paranoid about details. One data breach. One careless employee leaving something important out. And that’s all it takes to destroy years of hard work.
So I check. And double-check. And triple-check until I’m satisfied.
Finally, I grab my purse and head to the parking garage.
Ethan texted me earlier asking if I could pick Jake up. Didn’t say why. Just said he’d appreciate it.
Which probably means he and Sabrina are having a date or dealing with some relationship thing that requires privacy.
Which is fine by me.
My buddy Jake and I spent days orchestrating that cruise ship. Rooting for them, and watching them fall for each other has been the most satisfying thing we’ve done together.
And if picking up Jake from school gives them more alone time to spend together? I couldn’t be happier to play babysitter.
The drive to Early Learners Academy takes fifteen minutes. I park across the street from the main entrance, leaving the radio on, humming along to some pop song I don’t know the name of.
The dismissal bell rings at exactly three o’clock.
