Chapter 89-2
“No you’re not.” Jake Interrupts cheerfully. “I meant Mean Lady Jessica. But…you’re even dumber than her. At least she’s smart enough to wear a mask when kidnapping a kid. Why didn’t you think of that?”
“You-”
“Anyways, New Dad doesn’t negotiate with bad guys. And bad guys who take people for money always lose.”
“Your ‘New Dad’ isn’t here. And he’ll pay whatever we ask to get you back safely.”
“Maybe. Or maybe he’ll just find us and call the police and you’ll go to jail forever.” Jake looks between us. “That seems more likely. Since you’re both not very smart and not very good at crime.”
I feel a vein starting to throb in my temple. “What makes you think we’re not good at crime?”
“Well.” Jake holds up one finger. “You brought me to a construction site that has cameras.” He points to the corner where, sure enough, a security camera is mounted. Its red light blinking steadily. “So New Dad can probably already see where I am.”
Freya whirls around, finally noticing the camera. “Shit. I thought this place was abandoned-”
“It is. But construction sites have cameras so people don’t steal stuff.” Jake holds up a second finger. “And you called my mom from a phone. Phones can be tracked. My teacher taught us that in safety class. So the police probably know where you are too.”
“We used a burner phone-”
“Doesn’t matter. New Dad has tech people who can track signals.” A third finger goes up. “And you
kidnapped me from school where there’s cameras and witnesses and Mrs. Hamilton who will definitely tell
people what you look like.”
“She didn’t see our faces-”
“She saw Mean Lady Jessica’s face. Because Mean Lady Jessica is the one who picked me up.” Jake looks at Freya. “And you were the driver. So you’re going to get in more trouble for helping Mean Lady Jessica even though she’s obviously bad at planning.”
Freya’s face goes through several emotions. Confusion. Realization. Panic.
She turns to me. “You picked him up yourself? I thought you said you were going to send someone-
“I improvised,” I snap. “The plan changed.”
Stupid idiot. Of course I had to go personally. That’s a school after all. Teachers won’t just hand kids over to a random person.
I was lucky Dustin added me as an emergency contact for Jake, otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to
take him.
“Jessica, if you were on camera-if the achool can identify you-” Freya’s voice is rising now. “They’ll know it was us! Both of us!”
“Yep.” Jake nods helpfully. “You’re both going to jail. Probably for a really long time. My mom’s lawyer is really good. He got my bad dad to lose everything in court before.”
“Shut up.” I round on him, my control slipping. “Another word out of your mouth-
“You can’t hurt me,” Jake says calmly. “You need me safe to get money from New Dad. And Bad Dad will get angry at you. You’ll go to jail for even longer then.”
He’s right. The brat is absolutely right and he knows it.
We can’t hurt him without destroying our leverage. Can’t let him go without losing our bargaining chip. Can’t do anything except wait for Sabrina to arrive and hope this disaster of a plan somehow works out.
“Besides,” Jake continues, swinging his legs again, “if you hurt me, Aunt Sophia will hunt you down. She’s
really scary when she’s mad. One time, a man was mean to my mom at the grocery store and Aunt Sophia
made him cry just by talking to him. She didn’t even yell. She just used her ‘I’m going to destroy your life’
