Chapter 93-1

(Jessica’s POV)

The knife feels heavier than it should.

Clam

I’m not a violent person. Never have been. I threaten, manipulate, scheme-but I don’t actually hurt people.

Except now I’m holding a knife to a five-year-old’s throat.

And the look on Sabrina’s face as she walks into the abandoned building makes something twist in my

stomach.

Pure terror. Maternal desperation. The kind of fear that transcends everything else.

“Let him go.” Her voice shakes but her eyes are fierce. “Please. He’s just a kid. I’ll give you whatever you want. Just let my son go.”

“Shut up.” I try to sound menacing but my voice comes out shaky. Damn this kid. It’s all his fault. I lost the

confidence to pull this off after hearing all that bullshit from him. “You’re going to do exactly what I say or

Before I can complete my words, I hear sirens.

Distant but getting closer.

No. No no no. This can’t be happening.

We were careful. How did they find us so fast?

Jake hears them too. His face brightens. “See? I told you they were coming. You guys should really run away now. Those sirens are getting closer.”

He’s right. They are getting closer.

And suddenly this whole thing-the kidnapping, the ransom demand, the plan to terrorize Sabrina and get

money from Ethan-feels like the stupidest thing I’ve ever done.

Which is saying something, considering my recent track record.

The sirens are getting louder. Multiple vehicles by the sound of it.

“We need to go.” I release Jake, already backing toward the rear exit. “Now.”

“What about the kid?” Freya gestures to Jake, who’s just sitting there looking remarkably calm for

someone who was just held at knifepoint.

“Leave him! His mother’s here! Just run!”

We bolt for the back door. Freya’s ahead of me, her longer legs eating up the distance.

Behind us, I hear Jake’s voice, cheerful and unconcerned: “Bye Mean Lady Jessica! Bye Mean Lady Freya!

Have furrin jail!”

And despite everything-the fear, the panic, the complete failure of our plan-I can’t help thinking one

thing.

That kid is going to be an absolute terror when he grows up.

God help whoever crosses him then.

Halfway to the exit, my brain catches up to my panic.

The cameras. The security cameras Jake pointed out earlier.

If I run now, if I leave without destroying that footage, isn’t that just delivering evidence right into the cops

hands?

Devin Finley’s money and connections can make a lot of things disappear. But not video evidence.

“Wait!” I grab Freya’s arm. “The cameras. We need to destroy the cameras.”

“There’s no time-”

“There’s no time to go to prison either!” My voice is sharp. “Listen. You stay here. Create a distraction.

Keep them busy while I find the security room and wipe the footage.”

“Are you insane? I’m not staying here while the police-”

“You’re Devin Finley’s daughter.” I grip her shoulders, making her look at me. “The police can’t do anything

to you without evidence. And without those cameras, there is no evidence. It’s just a confused child’s

word against yours. Your father will have you out in hours.”

She’s wavering. I can see it.

“But if they get that footage? We’re both going to prison for years.”

That does it. Fear overrides logic and she nods frantically.

“Okay. Okay. I’ll distract them. But you better destroy those cameras.”

“I will. I promise.”

I don’t wait for her response. Just run deeper into the building, searching for the security office.

Behind me, I hear voices. Police. Ethan Hale’s distinctive tone. Sophia screaming Jake’s name.

And Sabrina, crying with relief.

I find the security room on the second floor. The door’s locked but it’s old, flimsy. Two good kicks and it splinters open.

The monitors show multiple angles of the building. Including clear footage of me and Freya with Jake. Of me holding a knife to Jake’s neck.

If Dustin sees this footage, I’ll be done for.

grab the hard drive and rip it from the system. Smash it against the floor. Stomp on it until the casing cracks and components scatter.

Chapter 93-2

Then I grab the backup drive and destroy that too.

By the time I’m done, there’s no recoverable data. No evidence except Jake’s testimony and whatever

Freya might say.

I slip out a side window, drop to the ground, and run.

(Dustin’s POV)

The drive to the construction site takes twenty minutes.

When the car stops, I hop out and run toward the site, ducking under police tape, ignoring an officer’s

shout to stop.

And that’s when I see them.

Sabrina. Holding Jake. Both of them alive. Safe.

Relief hits me so hard my knees nearly buckle.

Claim

Jake’s talking animatedly to a police officer, gesturing with his hands, clearly explaining something. His

clothes are dirty but he looks unharmed.

Sabrina’s got him pressed against her chest like she’ll never let go. Her face is buried in his hair. Her

shoulders are shaking.

Ethan stands beside them, one hand on Sabrina’s back. Protective. Supportive.

They portray the image of a perfect family. But that’s a lie. Sabrina and Jake are my family, not Ethan’s.

They’re mine.

When Sophia spots me, her expression goes from relief to pure fury in half a second.

She storms toward me, and I instinctively take a step back.

“You.” She jabs a finger at my chest. “This is your fault. You brought that psychotic bitch into their lives.

And now your son was kidnapped because of your shitty decisions.”
