Adriana froze. “What?”

“That’s not even the worst part,” Eva said, worried all over her face. “Mr. Harold plans to take back his shares and kick Mr. Lincoln out of the company. Even when they fought over Cynthia years ago, he wasn’t this furious.”
Adriana stared at Eva, stunned.
Eva had to be well–connected inside the Lincoln Estate to know that much.
She always seemed to have the latest gossip about both the Lincolns and the Bartons, which meant she probably held a key position in the household.
If she said it, it was likely true.
“But why?” Adriana asked, still confused. Curtis was Harold’s only grandson. Why would Harold go that far?
“Word is, Mr. Harold wants Mr. Lincoln to divorce you and marry Nicole,” Eva explained, sighing. “He’ll never drop the marriage agreement between the Lincolns and the Bartons.”
Adriana’s eyes widened. So, Curtis had made his grandfather furious because he refused to marry Nicole?
“Didn’t Curtis already turn down the Bartons‘ marriage deal years ago when he left for Cynthia?” she asked, not understanding why Harold was even angrier this time.
“Because Nicole came back. Back then, Mr. Lincoln said no to the marriage because the Bartons switched plans and wanted Curtis to marry Danielle instead.” Eva gave Adriana a soft, pitying look. “Mrs. Lincoln, I’ve known Mr. Harold for years. He won’t give up on that marriage deal between the families.”
To Eva, Curtis would give in sooner or later.
Adriana nodded. Now she understood.
“Adriana, I really like you,” Eva said as she sat next to Adriana and gently held her hand. “But I work for the Lincolns.”
Her face showed guilt. “Mr. Harold called me earlier. He told me to talk you into leaving on your own. He said he’ll agree to whatever you ask for. Don’t make things harder for Mr. Lincoln.”
If Adriana had left herself, maybe Curtis wouldn’t have to take the hit.
“I get it,” Adriana said quietly, her chest feeling heavy.
“I know it hurts.” Eva sighed. “But if you don’t end this marriage, Mr. Lincoln might really get kicked out. Years ago, after some family drama, Mr. Harold sent him back to their old house in Govendale.
“Mr. Harold cares about his grandson, but he used to be a soldier. He’s strict, serious, and not the type to spoil anyone.”
Adriana fidgeted with her fingers, her mind racing. She couldn’t let Curtis lose everything because of her.

“I’ll file for the divorce myself,” she whispered.

They sat in silence for a moment before Adriana suddenly looked up. “Wait, Curtis‘ old house is in Govendale?”
Eva nodded. “Yeah. The Lincolns came from Govendale. Later, they moved to Harborton for business, but their family altar and ancestral home are still there. Whenever Mr. Lincoln messes up, he has to go there and think things through.”
The Lincolns were a powerful family with deep roots in Harborton. Their ancestral home and altar, however, were in Govendale, passed down for generations and now owned by Harold.
Adriana went quiet. What a strange coincidence.
She had been adopted at 12, also in Govendale.
But Govendale was a big place, and she’d lived deep in the mountains. There was no way she and Curtis had
ever met.
When Curtis got home, Adriana was still sitting on the couch, lost in thought.
They were basically just business partners–no real feelings. She’d thought that ending the marriage wouldn’t affect her.
But somehow, her heart felt hollow.
“Welcome back.” She jumped up the moment he came in, grabbed his slippers, and fussed over his coat.
She’d picked up those little gestures from Bonnie.
Bonnie even had her own doll handbook and gave Adriana a copy to study.
Curtis was taken aback by Adriana’s sudden warmth and watched her with curious eyes.
Noticing his look, Adriana quickly stood on her toes and kissed his cheek. “You must be tired.”
Her effort to act sweet and clingy was a bit awkward, but with her face, even awkward looked adorable.
Curtis raised an eyebrow, smirking. “What are you up to this time?”
He pulled her close and pinched her cheek, pretending to interrogate her.
Her cheek stung a bit from his pinch. She looked at him, feeling hurt and confused. What had she done wrong? She was just trying to make him happy.
“Nothing,” Adrjana said quickly, trying to explain.
“Are you mad because I didn’t let you go out with Yolanda?” Curtis asked.
