“Adriana …” he called, his voice tight with frustration and a hint of desperation. “Can you please stop acting like this?”

But she didn’t respond, letting him talk to himself as if he weren’t even there.

He sighed. She used to be so swedt around him, but now she was impossible.

Matthew got up and sat down beside her.

Adriana didn’t even glance at him. She tried to scoot away, but he grabbed her arm.

“Look.” He pulled out his phone, showing her photos and videos of Curtis and Cynthia. “He’s going to marry Cynthia sooner or later. The only reason he hasn’t yet is Nicole. Mr. Harold won’t approve of them marrying, but he’s old. How much longer can he hang on? Curtis is just using you to keep Mr. Harold off Cynthia’s back. You’re taking all the blows for her. When Mr. Harold passes away, you two will split, and he’ll marry Cynthia immediately.”

Adriana stared at the photos. Even knowing she was just a contract wife, she still felt a little uncomfortable.

“Mr. Lincoln pays me 30 million a year and throws in a bunch of perks! He values my design skills and wants to send me abroad to study. That’s enough for me. I’m willing to be his shield,” Adriana said coldly, staring at Matthew.

What Curtis offered her were tangible, real things.

“Adriana! Don’t you get it? You can’t just waltz into the Lincolns‘ world. Curtis pissed off both the Bartons and the Lincolns. Even with that 30 million, you won’t survive long enough to enjoy it!” Matthew didn’t know if she was clueless or just pretending.

People from their circles couldn’t just be let in. Adriana was an orphan. Thinking she could change her status by marrying Curtis was ridiculous. For them, money came last.

“None of this is your business,” Adriana said, trying to shut him down.

She thought he was far too nosy. “Mr. Langford, you’re about to marry Natasha. Maybe worry about her instead of wasting time on me!”

“Still upset with me?” Matthew grabbed her wrist. “Look, I’m sorry. I swear, once I sort things out with the Langfords and secure my spot, I’ll make it up to you. Don’t be dumb. It’s not too late if you ask for a divorce from Curtis now.”

He just wanted her to leave before things got worse.

“No matter why Curtis married me, he’s my husband now. I’m already married, so please respect that.” Adriana pushed his hand away and started to walk off.

“Anna, do we really have to argue like this? Are you only going to talk to me when you have nowhere else to turn?” Matthew’s voice dropped, tinged with frustration.

Adriana stopped and glanced back at him. “Matthew, there’s no point in chasing me. I’m just an orphan. I can’t give you what you want, and you know I’m useless to you. I mean something to Curtis–he can use me as a shield. But for you, I’m useless. Natasha is way more valuable for your goals.”
