Chapter 121 The Lie on the Edge of Collapse
Adriana finally worked up the courage to face Harold.
If he hadn’t forced Curtis to break up with Cynthia back then, Curtis wouldn’t have rebelled against him and ended up marrying her instead.
All of this had happened because Harold was too controlling and always had to interfere.
He clearly loved his grandson, so why did he have to be so stubborn about who Curtis married?
“You’re an outsider. What do you know?” Harold snorted, looking at Adriana like she didn’t belong.
“You’re just an orphan,” Nicole sneered. “Leeching off Curtis, eating his food, living in his house. Pathetic, clingy little vine like you should be cut off before you choke the life out of him.”
A dodder vine seemed fragile and dependent, but its strangling power was fierce. It wrapped itself tightly around its host, draining its nutrients until the host eventually withered and died.
Harold understood that well, which was exactly why he refused to let Curtis marry beneath his status.
In their world, only a union of equals was acceptable.
And Nicole was the perfect match.
Everything the Barton family owned would one day belong to her, and if Curtis married her, he’d inherit it
all.
Adriana stared at her coldly. “And what about you? Without your Barton name, what are you?”
Nicole’s expression darkened. “Quit wasting time!”
“Adriana,” Harold said sternly, “if you’re really pregnant, I’ll leave you alone. But if you’re lying, I won’t forgive you. Not even Curtis can protect you this time.” He motioned for his assistant to take her in for a
test.
Adriana’s pulse raced. Panic spread through her chest.
Should she refuse and wait for Curtis to come back–or just go along with it?
Harold had come prepared. If she resisted, things would turn ugly fast.
“Stop scheming,” Nicole taunted. “You’re not getting out of this today.”
She sounded completely sure Adriana wasn’t pregnant.
“You really think Curtis will marry you just because he divorces me? Keep dreaming.” Adriana ignored her, glancing at the bodyguards before quietly following them toward the hospital.
Harold was determined to find out the truth today.
Adriana hesitated, phone in hand, debating whether to call Curtis.

Just then, his name flashed on the screen.
Relief washed over her, but before she could answer, Nicole snatched the phone.

Without thinking, she picked up the call. “Curtis, it’s Nicole. I’m at the hospital with Adriana. Mr. Harold brought us here. She lied about being pregnant–you’ll know the truth soon.”
Adriana let out a helpless sigh. Nicole really didn’t have a brain.
“Give the phone to Adriana. Don’t make me say it twice,” Curtis said, his tone low and cold.
Nicole froze, her face stiff.
Furious and a little scared, she threw the phone back at Adriana.
“Curtis,” Adriana whispered, her voice trembling.
She wasn’t scared–just afraid of what would happen when the truth came out.
Don’t be scared. Do you think you can faint right now? Curtis said with a faint laugh. “My men are already there. I won’t let Grandpa take you away.”

Adriana blinked. So, they were acting now. “I guess … I can,” she murmured.
Yeah, fainting was something she could manage.
“Good. Do it. I’ll finish up here and get back as soon as I can.”
His voice steadied her heart.
Just hearing him made her feel safe again.
After hanging up, Adriana followed Harold a few more steps, then suddenly swayed and slowly lowered herself to the ground.
She did it so awkwardly and carefully that even the bodyguards stared, speechless.
Was she pretending?
Harold frowned. “Stop acting. Get up.”
