“I know.” Gary was well aware that Irene wasn’t the kind of woman who would compromise for

anyone.

“Let’s go overseas for … a surrogate,” Gary said, looking straight at Irene, dead serious.

He wanted a child that was theirs–his and Irene’s.

Anyone else’s? He didn’t want it.

Irene frowned at him. “I don’t want kids, not because I can’t handle the pain of giving birth or because I refuse to do it myself. It’s because I truly don’t believe I’d make a good mother. So drop it.”

She shut him down right away.

Gary went silent. Then, in frustration, he leaned in and bit her cheek.

He knew this woman would never give him what he wanted.

“The paternity test is still processing. The fastest we’ll get the results is tomorrow night,” Gary said hoarsely.

Irene smirked. “Wanna make a bet? If this test shows the sample is my niece, I’ll have a baby with you. How’s that?”

He’d helped Irene search for years. God knows how many paternity tests they’d done. Maybe a hundred, at least 90. Not a single one had come back as Nicole.

If Nicole were really that easy to find, Irene would never be joking about it.

“Ugh, you’re no fun.” Irene rolled her eyes. “Can’t you at least give me a little hope?”

Gary sighed, looking at her. “Fine. If this result comes back and it’s really your niece Nicole, then you marry me. And you give me a baby.”

Irene narrowed her eyes, skeptical. “You wouldn’t mess with the paternity test results, would you?”

Gary met her gaze, eyes deep and steady. “Do you really think I’d mess with the one thing that means the most to you?”

She always had a way of getting under his skin. Every single time, without fail. It was like from the very moment he met her, she had him completely wrapped around her finger. Tightly.

At Curtis’s place, Adriana had just finished her shower.

She was now lying on the bed, holding her stomach, completely lost in thought.

Was there really a baby inside her?

She’d looked it up online. The forums said it was normal to spot a little when the embryo implanted.

So… that day, it wasn’t her period. It meant she was pregnant.

Her ears burned red, and she immediately dove under the covers, squirming and rolling around like a little worm.

When Curtis came out of the bathroom, the first thing he saw was Adriana wriggling under the blanket like a chubby little caterpillar.

He chuckled and walked over to sit beside her on the bed. “I cleared part of my schedule, and I’ll stay home with you this whole week. After that, I’ll go with you to get the blood test,” he said.

Curtis didn’t want to leave her alone. He needed to be by her side during this time.

Things still weren’t calm with Nicole and Danielle. Even though Chandler’s company getting into trouble had kept Danielle occupied for now, Nicole–dumb as she was–was still poking around, clearly up to something.

“Seriously?” Adriana peeked her head out of the covers, eyes wide with surprise and joy.

She didn’t know why, but hearing Curtis say he’d stay with her made her ridiculously happy.

“Yeah,” Curtis nodded.

His phone rang. He ruffled her hair affectionately, then stood up to take the call.

“Mr. Lincoln, the second paternity test you asked me to run in secret–it’s done. Nicole’s a fake. She’s not the real Nicole at all,” Kenneth said in a low voice.
