Chapter 135 I Know My Place
“I never did anything to you,” Adriana said, looking at Belinda.

“You knew too, didn’t you? That my mom isn’t dead. You’re a liar too.” Belinda’s voice was heavy with resentment.
Adriana thought for a moment before speaking. “I found out when we were in Harborton. I was just as surprised to learn your mother was alive. Your uncle kept her protected very well. Not telling you… I imagine he had his reasons.”
Belinda remained silent.
Adriana took a deep breath. “I don’t know if my guess is right, but the reason Curtis protected your mother so thoroughly probably wasn’t just out of love for her, right? The car accident back then… it probably wasn’t so simple? So, faking her death was actually a way to protect her. You were young; it would have been easy for you to slip up. If he had told you, and let it slip …”

Belinda froze, looking up at Adriana. Adriana was indeed very clever and good at comforting people. “Really?”
Adriana nodded. “I don’t know the full truth, but Curtis is a very thorough person. He wouldn’t disregard your feelings without cause. If he did this, it must mean your mother’s safety was more important than your feelings.
“Oh, and on the way here, your mother contacted Curtis. She asked him to pick you up and then go get her from the hospital for discharge,” Adriana said with a smile, though a sharp pang of sourness twisted in her chest.
Belinda sat up, looked at Adriana, opened her mouth, and finally managed, after a long pause, “Wait for me. I’ll need to get dressed.”
Once dressed, she stood looking at Adriana, seeming to want to say something else but hesitating.
“Is there something you want to say?” Adriana asked directly.
Belinda looked at Adriana. “Are you … are you really only with Curtis for the money? Don’t you have
any other feelings for him? Actually … if my mom weren’t alive, I thought … he might have fallen for you.”
The way Curtis treated Adriana was indeed special.
It was a treatment none of the women who had ever gotten close to Curtis before had received.

Adriana stood frozen for a moment, lowered her gaze, was silent for a beat, then clenched her fingers slightly and smiled. “What are you talking about? Curtis is my benefactor, my boss… I know my place.”
Belinda didn’t say more and followed Adriana out.
Probably, she really wanted to see her mother too, because she had deliberately dressed up, donning a very pretty white dress, looking like a proper, well–behaved girl.
“Adriana, actually… I think you’re better suited for Curtis,” Belinda said just before they entered the elevator. “But I have my own selfish reasons too. Sorry.”
Adriana didn’t quite catch it and wanted her to repeat it, but Belinda fell silent.
Downstairs in the lobby, Curtis was waiting in the lounge area. His long legs looked almost cramped on the relatively low sofa.
Adriana spotted Curtis from afar. He really did stand out too much in a crowd, always drawing the eye immediately.
Before, she always thought Matthew was top–tier among the rich kids, but after meeting Curtis, she realized what truly top–tier, unapologetic presence meant.
“Took you long enough.” Seeing Belinda hiding behind Adriana, Curtis frowned and stood up. “Faking a sickness and skipping class? Is this how you were taught?”
“Uh, she really wasn’t feeling well,” Adriana quickly covered for Belinda.
Belinda nodded, still hiding behind Adriana.
Curtis glanced at Belinda. He clearly bought into Adriana’s defense and stopped pressing further.
“Curtis…” Seeing Curtis about to head to the car, Adriana spoke up nervously. “Maybe I’ll just stay here … You and Belinda should go pick up her mother. I … I’ll head home?”
Adriana felt like an outsider. What if Cynthia was unhappy if she tagged along?
Then Curtis would have to comfort her …
She didn’t want to see Curtis comforting another woman. Even knowing full well she was just an employee, she still didn’t want to see it.
“You met her in Harborton, didn’t you? You’re acquainted. Come along,” Curtis said, taking Adriana’s hand.
Adriana didn’t really understand Curtis’s thinking. Why did he insist she go? Wasn’t he afraid

his first love would be upset? Or, like Matthew used to do, was he bringing her along to reassure Cynthia?
The memory of when Matthew had called her over to be bullied by Rufus and the others, just to reassure Natasha, sent a chill down Adriana’s spine.
