Benjamin was done checking on Nina and glanced back at Amelia.

The tension between them was palpable–hard to miss–and there always seemed to be. interruptions.

Daniel left, then William arrived.

Just when everyone who needed to leave had gone, Nina woke up.

The first thing she did after waking was look at her chubby arm where blood had been drawn.

She stared at it until her mouth turned down.

Amelia, afraid she’d cry, quickly tried to distract her.

“Nina, how about Mommy carries you outside the hospital for a walk?

“There are shops out there–we can buy things.”

Nina still loved shopping.

Hearing about stores and buying stuff, she nodded her little head despite the pout. “Mommy hug!”

Amelia picked her up. Nina’s arm didn’t really hurt anymore, but she still acted like it was a serious injury.

She wouldn’t let Amelia touch it. She wanted Amelia to wrap it up.

“Nina, your arm isn’t hurt. No need for bandages,” Amelia said.

Nina sniffed sadly. “Hurt!”

She insisted on the bandage. Amelia had no choice but to wrap her arm with gauze.

The tiny needle mark disappeared under the layers. Nina leaned weakly into Amelia’s arms, looking every bit the pitiful little patient.

Benjamin watched the now–bandaged “invalid” in Amelia’s arms. His already stoic face grew even quieter.

Amelia cleared her throat and told him she was heading out.

“I’ll go with you.”

Benjamin didn’t comment on how she handled Nina, but he still paid attention to Amelia.

Amelia smiled and declined. “You stay and rest. It’s just us two going out. Nina would probably go find Daniel and William anyway.”

Benjamin nodded.

He knew Nina was off to tattle.

He was right. The moment bandaged Nina stepped out of the room, before she even saw Daniel and William, she raised her chubby arm and complained to every passing nurse.

In a foreign country, the nurses couldn’t quite understand her.

After “reporting” to two nurses, she gave up.

She couldn’t understand them either.

Reporting to nurses failed, but luckily, William and Daniel were perfect audiences.

Hearing about her “injured” arm, both were heartbroken.

“Nina, you poor thing! Come here, I will hold you.”

“Nina, I’ll buy you a toy.”

With Daniel and William fussing over her, Nina’s little princess status was rock–solid–even Benjamin couldn’t shake it.

Amelia had planned to go shopping with Nina, but with Daniel and William there, she didn’t need to.

Nina had plenty of caretakers. Amelia reconsidered and turned back.

When she returned, Benjamin wasn’t in the room.

He had gone to check on Chloe.

Amelia followed.

They stood quietly together outside Chloe’s room.

Amelia asked softly, “How’s your sister? Is she out of danger?”

Benjamin’s expression darkened. “Not yet. The equipment here isn’t enough. Amelia, we need to go home.”

She knew the Graham family had top hospitals and medical teams back home.

After she agreed, Benjamin frowned and asked about Nina.

“Have Nina’s test results come back yet?”

Nina had a mild bacterial infection–nothing serious.

Just some medicine and shots would fix it.

Amelia relayed the results and the doctor’s advice to Benjamin.

He nodded.

Nina’s issues could be treated properly once they were home.
