“I hit him,” Nina said, even waving her little hand as she spoke.

But she didn’t hit William.

Nina never hit William.

She didn’t hit people much older or much younger than her because Amelia said she could really hurt them.

If she hurt someone, the police would come and take her to jail.

Nina didn’t really understand what “jail” meant.

Amelia explained for ages before summarizing, “Jail is where they lock you up. You wouldn’t be able to see me anymore or sleep with me.”

Nina was very afraid of not being able to see Amelia, so she was also afraid of the police taking her away.

To avoid being taken by the police, Nina had learned to be more selective with her slaps.

“Grandpa, not die,” Nina babbled at the end, saying something no one understood.

William pressed for details, but Nina just kept repeating “not die.”

Unable to get a clear answer, William finally gave up.

Once home, Nina was busy again, talking to the nannies and the dogs. With her occupied, William had no chance to question her further.

As time passed, Nina made up with Amelia before bed.

“Mommy, hold me?” she asked, worn out from the day and now calm.

Amelia picked her up and kissed her chubby cheek.

“Mommy, I love you,” the unusually calm Nina murmured, snuggling against Amelia’s chest, her fleshy little face nuzzling Amelia as she expressed her love,

Amelia’s heart melted. “Mommy loves you, too.”

The two exchanged “I love you” and kisses. Benjamin, seemingly oblivious, remained nearby.

He wasn’t looking at the bed, but he was busy folding Nina’s little clothes by the bedside.

Nina had more clothes than she could ever wear, with too many people buying them for her.

Noticing Benjamin, Amelia patted Nina’s chubby bottom and whispered in her ear, “Nina, go hug Daddy. He’s working for you.”

Nina, having her bottom patted, giggled.

Then she climbed up and walked to the edge of the bed. “Daddy!”
