The more Matthew reflected about it, the angrier he got. He completely forgot Natasha was standing right there. In front of everyone, he grabbed Adriana by the wrist, dragged her into his office, and slammed the door shut behind them.
Natasha froze. Her eyes darted around to the curious employees watching.
Originally… she’d wanted everyone to laugh at Adriana. But now, she was the joke.

Inside the office, Matthew frowned at Adriana, his face filled with anger. “Who spot? Was it Curtis? Do you even realize he’s only getting close to you for a reason?”
Adriana looked straight at him. “And who hasn’t gotten close to me for a reason? When you took me away from campus back then, wasn’t it because you had an agenda too? You just wanted to protect the Langford Group’s reputation. You didn’t want me to call the police and make your family look bad.”
Matthew looked guilty and turned his eyes away. “Adriana, do you have to keep holding on to what happened back then? I’ve been trying to make it up to you for years. Haven’t I treated you well?”
Adriana laughed. “Treated me well? If I had gone to the police, Mia, Rufus, and Camelia would’ve faced criminal charges. I lost hearing in my left ear forever, broke several bones, and almost lost my eyesight! You know how many years they’d get for that.”
All the money Matthew had spent on her rent, tuition, and living expenses over the even come close to what they owed her.
years didn’t
“Matthew, would you really have let Mia go to jail?” Adriana asked. “I heard she once smashed a bottle over some rich girl’s head at a bar. You spent nearly ten million and gave up a big project just to make the other side forgive her, right? So I’m not worth that kind of money?”
Because she was an orphan and easy to manipulate. Back when she was a teenager with zero life experience, Matthew fooled her with just a little cake, some flowers … and she fell for it completely.
All these years, whenever Matthew visited her, he’d sweet–talk her a bit–buying her small treats like cupcakes, ice cream, or bouquets of flowers.
It’s not that those gifts were bad–it’s that Matthew never really put any thought into them.
“So, you’re saying I didn’t give you enough?” Matthew glared at her and yanked her closer. “What about Curtis? What did he promise you? Are you that desperate to throw yourself at him and be his lover?”

Matthew frowned, his eyes burning with anger.
Adriana laughed. She knew money wasn’t the issue. Matthew could offer more; he just didn’t think she was worth it.
“Did he touch you?” Matthew lost control, demanding to know if Curtis had been with her.
Adriana didn’t answer, so Matthew grabbed her chin hard and shouted again, “I asked you–did he touch you?!”
She’d seen him like this before. Three years ago, when her depression was at its worst, she couldn’t stay away from him. Matthew had kept her close, he often brought her along to his private parties with friends.

guy.
Someone like Matthew–powerful, shining wherever he went–was willing to buy her flowers and cakes, to cheer her up, to fight for her, to give her a home…
How could she not fall for him?
She was just a clueless teenager back then.
Now, she finally understood. When Matthew fought that night, it wasn’t really for her, but for himself.
He just couldn’t stand anyone touching what he thought belonged to him. He was protecting his possession.
“Matthew, let Anna talk to Jimmy alone,” Natasha said from outside the door after finally calming down enough to knock.
Adriana shot Matthew a mocking look. “Don’t bother worrying about me. Between 30 million and a broke guy, I know which one to pick.”
Then, she wanted to leave.
“You’re that desperate to throw yourself away?!” Matthew was furious.
Adriana was confused why he was so furious. “So, following your plans, marrying someone you picked, letting you control my entire life–that’s not throwing myself away? Matthew, who do you think you are? Why do you think you get to decide who I marry?”
