Chapter 381 Let’s Get Married
This was what human nature was really like.
Humans were complicated and always shifting. They were wired to look for the best outcome and stay away from trouble.
Barton Tower.
Adriana sat in the conference room, her face calm as she watched the board members debate. Every now and then, she spun her phone in her hand.
The moment the design contest was over, these people couldn’t wait to drag her in for a company meeting. All they really wanted was to weigh their options.
They were trying to figure out what would hurt more–losing Justin as the person in charge, or losing Matthew, Ronan, and the other key partners.
Finally, Anthony, who always took the lead, spoke first. “Ms. Barton, we all saw today’s competition. You’re a very talented designer, which is great for Barton Group’s reputation, but running a business isn’t the same as drawing up a design. Just because you have talent there doesn’t mean you can run a company. A place this big needs a man to be in charge…”
They were united in believing that a woman couldn’t handle, let alone run well, something this big.
Adriana gave a faint smile. “Who says a woman can’t run a company?”
She didn’t bother explaining. Their bias had already boxed them in. No amount of talking would change their minds. Only real results would shut them up.
“Ms. Barton, Jeremy worked hard to get Barton Group where it is. We don’t want to see it get…” Destroyed by you. Anthony was blunt. He almost said outright that he didn’t want Barton Group ruined by Adriana.
There was a moment of silence before Anthony spoke again. “Ms. Barton, we believe Justin is extremely capable. With him leading Barton Group, things can only get better. So… we hope you two can get married and give Barton Group the best possible future.”
Adriana looked at them and laughed a little. Of course, they wanted Justin in charge, but they also wanted her connections in the mix.
“Nicole, you can’t be willful about this. For the company, for everyone’s sake, you need to be willing to make sacrifices.” Anthony and a few others started with their moral pressure routine.
“Marriage isn’t something you or I can just decide. I’ve been married before. My husband died, and now everyone says I’m bad luck. Maybe Justin thinks I’m just jinxed. He’s… well, a little superstitious. Maybe he asked a psychic. Perhaps the psychic told him he’d drop dead if he married me, and he believed it. Adriana put on a sad face.
Adriana gave him an innocent look. “Age isn’t a problem. It’s all for the company. Can’t you make a little sacrifice too, Mr. Reid?” Adriana tossed the question right back at him.
“That Nicole… there’s something spooky about her. She lost her parents as a kid. After she married Curtis, he died. Her grandfather passed after their reunion. Maybe Justin heard about her bad luck, and that’s why he won’t marry her… I’ll admit, if it were me, I wouldn’t dare to marry her either. What if something really does happen?” After Adriana left, the board members started whispering.
“Yeah, right after she was born, her parents died. It’s creepy.”
The more they talked, the more spooked they got.
Anthony’s face got darker by the second. He slammed the table and stood up. “I’m out. Whether Justin marries her or not, that’s his problem. I’m definitely not marrying her. If any of you want to, be my guest.”
With that, Anthony made to leave.
“Anthony, what about the company?” The others quickly tried to stop him. “Looks like Justin is out.”
“If Justin’s leaving, let him. You can’t stop someone who’s made up their mind. At least Nicole did well in the competition and brought Barton Group a lot of benefits. She’s got a ton of connections, too. We’ll just have to work a little harder from here on out. Even if she’s not leadership material, we’ll have to do our best to help her succeed.”
