Chapter 57 Warning
“I’ll let you know if anything new comes up.”
After ending the call, Adriana sank into the couch, lost in her thoughts for what felt like ages.
What kind of people were her biological parents?
Finished
Why had they abandoned her all those years ago? Was it because she was a girl, or because they’d never loved her at all?
As she leaned back, her eyes grew heavy, and before she knew it, she had drifted into sleep.
When morning came, Adriana woke up in her own bed.
She couldn’t remember how she’d gotten there.
Yawning, she stretched, washed up, and headed downstairs for breakfast.
Halfway down the stairs, she spotted Curtis.
“Curtis?” Adriana’s tone held a hint of surprise; she hadn’t realized he was home. “When did you get back?”
“Last night,” he said coolly. “I’ve got some things to handle this morning. Be ready by ten. I’ll pick you up for the orphanage visit.”
Adriana nodded obediently.
After Curtis left, Eva smiled and said, “You fell asleep on the sofa last night. Mr. Lincoln carried you back to your room.”
Adriana froze, her face turning pink.
Was it really Curtis who carried her?
She exhaled softly, reminding herself not to read too much into it, and definitely not to catch feelings.
If she ever let herself fall for Curtis, she’d probably end up worse than she did with Matthew.
Nera Club.
Danielle was stunning that day, dressed in a pure white gown that made her look sweet and angelic; a complete shift from her usual mature look.
She stepped out of the elevator, smiling as she approached Curtis. “Curtis, what brings you here to see me?”
Curtis’s expression was hard, his tone icy. “Did you go see Adriana?”
Danielle froze for a second before forcing a smile. “Curtis, are you really that protective of her? Am I not

even allowed to visit her now? You don’t love her; it’s a contractual marriage. Don’t act like she’s your daughter.”
His voice dropped to a dangerous low. “Danielle, stay away from her. Contract or not, Adriana belongs to me. If you touch her, you’ll regret it.”
Her face tightened, though she still managed a stiff smile. “Curtis, I understand.”
Curtis glanced at his watch. “This is your first and final warning.”
With that, he turned and left.
Danielle’s face twisted with fury as she clenched her fists, watching his back disappear.
What was so special about Adriana that Curtis would go this far to defend her?
Hmph… maybe it is just because she is an orphan, and she’s easy to manipulate.
“Why is Curtis so protective of Adriana? Are they really just pretending it’s a contract marriage?” Natasha asked as she stepped out, curiosity in her tone.
Danielle settled onto the couch, lit a cigarette, and smirked. “You don’t understand Curtis. He’d defend anyone living under his roof, even a stray dog.”
Natasha frowned. “If he keeps shielding Adriana, she’ll never sign that letter. My brother and Mia could both end up behind bars.”
Danielle shot her a calm look. “Don’t worry. I have another plan.”
Natasha raised an eyebrow. “Oh? What kind of plan?”
“My grandfather’s been searching for his long–lost granddaughter, Nicole Barton, for years. Once he finds her, the engagement between the Bartons and Lincolns will move forward. When that happens, Harold will force Curtis to divorce Adriana and marry Nicole,” Danielle said with a cunning grin.
She and her father had already chosen the perfect impostor to pass off as ‘Nicole‘ and deceive her grandfather.
Natasha smirked. “Then I’ll wait for your good news.”
During the drive to the orphanage, Curtis remained quiet as usual.
Adriana, bored and unsure how to start a conversation, leaned against the car window and drifted off.
The road through Francisca County was rough and uneven, making the car bounce frequently.
Half–asleep, Adriana was sure her head would slam into the glass, but when she woke, it hadn’t.
She blinked and realized Curtis’s arm was beneath her cheek.
At some point, he had slipped his hand between her head and the window, cushioning her from the jolts.
