Harold seemed to understand finally and nodded. “Since you already have a Lincoln heir, you’re part of the family. All that stuff online, we’ll take care of it. Just keep your head down from now on.”

Adriana sensed it was a good point to stop and nodded obediently.

“She’s always been well–behaved. You should be telling me this, not her. I didn’t want to marry at first because of my age, but since I married someone younger, I should cherish her and treat her well,” Curtis said, gripping her delicate hand tighter.

He was aiming that at Harold.

Curtis was about seven years older than Adriana; he figured it was the perfect age gap.

Harold heard this and had no further complaints.

“Alright, let’s get ready for dinner,” Harold said, snorting in dissatisfaction, waving everyone to leave.

Rosa huffed in protest and got up to leave.

“Aunt Rosa, Adriana has prepared gifts for you and the other aunts. My wife is young. From now on, while she’s with the Lincolns, I hope all of you will look after her,” Curtis said. Today, he had stood up to Rosa, fearing she or the others would try to trip Adriana up.

He hadn’t married Adriana so she could come to the Lincoln Estate just to compete in family politics.

Kenneth and Tom carried piles of gifts–luxury items of considerable value.

Adriana looked at Curtis in surprise.

When had he bought all these gifts?

“Oh my, you really went all out … Just look at this!” Rosa and the others beamed, unable to hide their delight. After all, who doesn’t like expensive presents?

“Oh, this bag–I’ve wanted it for ages! Your uncle never bought it for me,” Rosa said happily, warming up toward Adriana. “Adriana, how long will you be in Harborton? If you have time, I’ll take you shopping.”

Adriana opened her mouth in shock. The speed at which they had changed their attitude was astonishing.

After the aunts and uncles left, Adriana whispered to Curtis. “When did you prepare all these gifts?”

He smiled. “I wanted to prevent them from making things difficult for you, so I had them ready in advance.”

Adriana’s heart skipped a beat.

He’s amazing. I wonder who he will end up with eventually.

His eyes hadn’t left Adriana since she stopped speaking and then spoke again. He hadn’t taken his gaze

“Harold, don’t you think Adriana … looks like Audrey?” Jeremy asked softly.

Harold paused, glancing back at Adriana, still talking with Curtis. “Yeah, I guess she does.”

“I’ve never wronged anyone in my life, except Audrey. If I hadn’t married Audrey back then, I wouldn’t have received the Barton support and reached where I am today…” Jeremy’s voice was hoarse. “But I didn’t take care of Audrey’s son properly, nor protect my granddaughter. Nicole is still out there, drifting.”

Harold sighed. “Better that she’s drifting than gone. Nicole is alive–that’s a blessing.”

Jeremy wiped his tears and nodded. “Yeah, as long as she’s alive. When I find her, I’ll spoil her twice as much. That’s the important thing.”

After dinner at the Lincolns, Curtis took Adriana on a tour of the estate.

A centuries–old family, the Lincolns had been imperial merchants and nobles way back when. After hundreds of years, they still stood proud and unshaken.

Adriana was amazed by the architecture and stunned by the collection of genuine artifacts. Even the vases in the main hall were top–quality porcelain.

“The unique Southern Colonial–style architecture makes the whole place feel so open … “Amelia couldn’t help but admire its graceful design, genuinely impressed by how striking it looked. Almost instinctively, she wanted to share it with Ethan. “Back in high school, the first blueprint I ever drew was inspired by classic Southern architecture!”
