“Mr. Langford, I think we should keep our distance. I’m married now.” Adriana yanked her hand free from Matthew and stepped back.
“Adriana!” Matthew grabbed her wrist again. “Do you have to wait until Curtis dumps you before you come
back to me?
“I admit, I haven’t always handled things well with you before, and I can improve…” Matthew actually lowered himself to say he would change.
But Adriana only found him laughable. “You’ve already announced your engagement to Natasha. What’s the point of saying that to me? Are you planning to get married to her first so I can be your mistress later?”
Matthew frowned. “Adriana, if I don’t marry … would you come back to me?”
Adriana was genuinely surprised. Matthew actually wants to break off the engagement? But he loves Natasha so much. What is he playing at?
“If you don’t marry, would you marry me? Matthew, you wouldn’t, because you worry too much. And the Langfords wouldn’t allow it either.” After four years together, Adriana knew him too well.
Matthew had his complications, and Adriana understood that. She had never expected him to marry her.
If the Langfords knew Matthew intended to marry a powerless orphan, they’d make his life hell, kick him out, and let one of the illegitimate kids take his place.
“Adriana …” Matthew’s voice grew low. “I can give you everything you want … you just need to give me some time…”
The Langfords‘ current situation was obvious to outsiders. Both illegitimate sons had joined the Langford Group, and everyone knew Matthew was under pressure.
The Langfords supported Matthew marrying Natasha because the Joneses held influence in Haldoria.
Matthew could marry Adriana–but it would take time. He needed to secure his position in the Langford Group. He needed to handle the two illegitimate sons first.
Adriana was silent for a moment, then slowly pushed Matthew’s hand away. “Matthew, stop fooling yourself.
You don’t love me.”
Four years had passed, and she still couldn’t make him fall for her. She didn’t believe he had any feelings for
her now.
Matthew’s pride and competitive streak drove him. Ife didn’t want his favorite toy to fall into someone else’s hands–fothing more.
“I wish you and Natasha a lifetime of happiness,” Adriana said before turning back to the dining room.
Matthew opened his mouth to explain, but she clearly didn’t believe him anymore.
Unless Curtis truly abandoned Adriana and forced her back onto the same desperate path from four years ago, Adriana would probably never return to Matthew.

Matthew leaned against the wall, massaging his forehead in frustration.
He didn’t want to hurt Adriana, nor did he want to drive her into desperation again.
But if that was the only way to have Adriana willingly stay by his side… he had no choice.
He realized… he truly couldn’t live without her.

He had understood too late, and over the past four years, he hadn’t held Adriana tightly enough–he had been far too lenient.
“Adriana, sometimes leaving a way out for others is also leaving a way out for yourself. If you don’t compromise about Mia and Rufus, you’ll anger both the Langfords and Joneses. Then … ” Natasha’s voice was low and threatening as she saw Adriana return.
“She’s not just angering the Langfords and Joneses. She’s got us Bartons to deal with too,” Danielle sneered at Adriana.
An orphan offending three powerful families at once–it was obvious what her future would look like.
“I’ll be waiting for the day Curtis throws you aside.” Natasha smiled, as if she were already anticipating it.
Adriana said nothing. She was afraid, but she still refused to compromise.
When Curtis returned, Adriana sat obediently in her chair. “Are you full? Once you’re done, we’ll leave.”
Adriana jumped to her feet and nodded vigorously.
Gosh, I’m so full.
She was so full that she felt like she might burp.
Curtis picked up a napkin and wiped the corner of Adriana’s mouth, then he held her hand as they prepared to leave.
“Curtis…” Danielle gave Nicole a meaningful look. She quickly stood up. “Can we exchange contact information? I’m going to college in Haldoria, and Grandpa said if I run into trouble there, I could reach out to you.”
“Honey, please add Nicole’s contact info. Take care of her when she’s in Haldoria,” Curtis said, pulling the slightly stiff Adriana into his arms. Before she could react, he grabbed her phone, unlocked it with her face ID, and smoothly scanned Nicole’s contact.
