I flinch at my mother’s words, but Cam doesn’t budge. His wolf form towers protectively in front of me and when he notices my discomfort, I’m met with a gigantic nose that’s in my face within seconds.

‘You flinched! Are you okay?!’ Cam communicates through the mind link while licking my face like a worried mother hen. And since we haven’t completed the mating ritual everyone in the pack can tune in and hear him fussing over me-something which makes me blush since I can feel more and more pack members listening in on us.

‘Alpha Camden?’

‘What’s up?’

‘Who flinched?’

‘Is someone in danger?’

‘Oh my god, have our Alpha found his mate?!’

My face gets redder and redder until I growl right back at the pack members now communicating inside my head. ‘Everyone just shut up!’

Silence falls…for exactly one second.

“That was Elmyra!’

‘SHE IS CAMDEN’S MATE!”

‘Wait, does that mean Elmyra is our new Luna?!’

My head spins until Camden growls at the pack and cuts off the mind link completely. Thank the moon goddess for that! Hearing everyone was about to drive me insane, but now, without the mind link active, Camden and I can’t communicate since he is still in his wolf form.

My mother, however, doesn’t have trouble spilling what’s on her mind. “Well?!” She asks impatiently. “Are you Camden’s fated mate, Elmyra?!”

Damn, what should I do? Answering my mother will lead to drama, but not answering her will also lead to drama. I’m practically cornered.

A groan leads my lips before I finally relent and decide to tell my prying mother the truth. “Yes, Mom. Cam is my fated mate.”

Her eyes widen, shock and disbelief warring on her face. “But…but Camden is your stepbrother! You grew up reading him bedtime stories on weekends… No, such a bond can’t be right. This is… it’s…how could the moon goddess allow such a thing?!”

Cam shifts back to his human form, not caring one bit about his nakedness as he places a big hand on the small of my back. “The moon goddess works in mysterious ways, Lisa. She chose Eli for me and I for her. There’s no changing that.”

My mother sputters, grasping for words. “But the two of you…under the same roof… it’s improper!”

“We’re not related by blood,” I remind her, standing tall despite the anxiety churning in my gut. “And we’re both consenting adults. Our mate bond is no one’s business but ours.”

My mother opens and closes her mouth with lightning going off and on in her eyes. She looks ready to go to war, but suddenly, the anger falters and turns into concern.

“Wait… didn’t the moon goddess say Cam’s mate wouldn’t live very long?” Sudden realization flashes over her face at her own question, and in the blink of an eye, I’m dragged away from Cam and hugged by my taller mother. “Oh, my sweet child, your cancer is back, isn’t it? That’s why you’re suddenly back in town. You came here to die!”

I stiffen in my mother’s embrace, taken aback by her sudden outpouring of emotion. It’s not like her to show such blatant concern for me, the black sheep of the family. But I suppose the prospect of losing a child, even one she’s never particularly favored, is enough to rattle even the most stoic of mothers.

“Mom, I…” I trail off, unsure what to say. I can’t lie and tell her I’m fine, but admitting the truth out loud feels like tempting fate.

Cam steps in. “Eli’s illness has returned, yes. But we’re not giving up. I won’t let my mate slip away from me so easily.”

My mother pulls back, wiping at her damp eyes. “But the moon goddess’ prophecy…”

“Screw the prophecy,” Cam growls. “Eli has found her mate-me-and if we form a strong enough bond, maybe it could heal her illness and save her life.”

My mother snorts. “A bond strong enough to heal werewolf cancer would take years to be forged, and the two of you don’t have that kind of time-”

“I’ve loved Eli for years!” Cam blurts out, and when I turn to stare at him, he averts his eyes with a maddening blush on his gorgeous face. “I…I mean… She has always been someone I admired, and Eli, you were…you were also my first crush, okay? So it’s not like my feelings are entirely new.”

Say what?! Cam just rocked my world with what he just admitted, but before my brain can process what my hotter-than-hell stepbrother just said, my mother butts in.

“You had a crush on Eli? But why!” When I shoot my mother a questioning glare, she quickly says, “Don’t get me wrong, Eli, I love you, but Cam…” She grimaces before blurting out what’s really on her mind. “With her illness, Eli is practically an Omega. She isn’t fit to be an Alpha’s mate and-”

“SHUT THE FUCK UP!” Cam roars, not only making my jaw fall to the bottom of the floor but my mother’s as well. We are both staring at him in stupefaction until I finally lose it and start laughing.

“Geez, never in a million years did I think I would see the day Cam defends my pride!”

Cam’s narrowed eyes are pinned to my face. “Eli, you might be my mate, but you really should stop turning

everything into a joke because this isn’t funny. Your own mother just tried to belittle you!”

“And? She has done that my entire life.”

Cam’s eyes flash with anger. “Just because she’s done it your whole life doesn’t make it right, Eli. You deserve better than that.”

He turns his fierce gaze on my mother, who actually takes a step back. “Lisa, I don’t care what you think about Eli’s worthiness as my mate. The moon goddess chose her for me, and that’s all that matters. I will stand by her side through anything, including this damned illness. So you can either support us or keep your opinions to yourself.”

My mother gapes at him, clearly not used to being spoken to in such a manner, especially not by her usually mild-mannered stepson. But after a tense moment, she nods stiffly.

“Very well. If that is your final decision, I won’t stand in your way. But don’t come crying to me when…” She clamps her mouth shut, apparently thinking better of finishing that thought. With a huff, she turns back to the stove, aggressively flipping a pancake.

I stare at Cam in awe, my heart swelling with emotion. No one has ever stood up for me like that before, not even my own mother, the times I’ve gotten into trouble. This makes me see Cam through heart-shaped lenses. I’m all fluttery and lovey-dovey…until he lifts his arm to sniff his armpit-typical young guy behavior.

“Hmm, it’s not me who is stinky…” he mutters before looking at me with flaring eyes. “You didn’t shower yesterday,” he says.

It takes a moment for my brain to realize what he is saying, and once I understand it, I gasp. “I don’t stink!”

Cam chuckles. “You do…” His lips quirk up by the corners when I gawk at him. “But that can be fixed if you let me bathe you, Eli.”

My anger turns into something else-something warm and wicked. The mental image of Cam washing me, touching me…fuck, I need to be strong and tell him fuck off; we’re going slow, remember?

But I’m not that perfect.

“Sure,” I blurt out. “I could go for a shower.”
