“Will you be okay heading to the morning workout by yourself?” Cam asks me by the breakfast table.

“I will be fine,” I tell him as I reach for the honey to put into my lemon tea.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes,” when he still doesn’t look convinced, I sigh. “Look, I get that we are mated now, but that doesn’t mean you have to be glued to my bum all the time. You have your duties as the new Alpha, and this morning, the pack elders will do some mojo-jojo Alpha ritual with you while your Beta, Ken, is holding the morning workout. And that’s fine. Sometimes, you won’t be able to train with your pack.”

“I know, but it feels bad leaving you in the hands of my Beta when he doesn’t even know we are mated. The other pack members don’t know it either-what if they will treat you badly because of this?”

I snort. “Oh, Cam…”

“What?”

“They will know that we are mated,” I give him a lewd smile from across the table. “A werewolf would have to be an idiot not to understand that I’m yours. Not only do I carry your mark, but your scent is rubbed all over

me.”

“True…” Cam scratches his chin. “Maybe I need to hug and squeeze you even more before you go, though. Just to make sure you REALLY smell like me.”

I laugh when Cam walks around the table to hug me from behind, his nose digging deep into my bed hair. He then proceeds to inhale me like my scent is everything to him, and I push at his shoulder, trying to get him away from me.

“Stop! You’re being ridiculous!”

Cam chuckles like the madman he is against my neck, his breath warm on my skin. “Ridiculous? I’m just making sure everyone knows you’re mine.”

I roll my eyes. “As if they could miss it. You’ve practically branded me.”

“Hmm, not a bad idea,” he murmurs, nipping playfully at my earlobe. “Maybe I will leave another mark right here. Two mate marks are better than one, yes?”

“Don’t you dare!” I squeal, squirming in his arms.

He laughs, squeezing me tighter. “Fine, fine. I won’t be branding you again. But I’m still going to scent you thoroughly before you leave to train with the others.”

I sigh dramatically, but secretly, I love the attention. “If you must.”

Cam spends the next few minutes rubbing his cheek against mine, his hands roaming over my body, leaving his scent everywhere he touches.

When I finally leave the house, I smell more like Cam than myself, and that’s something Evie and Clara don’t miss when I get inside Evie’s car.

“Oh my god,” Evie stares at me from behind the wheel. “You and Cam are totally a thing now!”

I blush. “That obvious, huh?”

“It is since you practically smell like you took a bath in Axe Bodyspray-the same kind Cam uses. You smell like a dude,” Clara says with a smirk. She is sitting at the front with her sister while I take the backseat. “So spill the details. What happened after Cam’s birthday party? Did he fuck you immediately?”

I sink lower in my seat, my face burning as I carefully grab the neck of my t-shirt to pull it down lower. Evie and Clara gasps when they see our Alpha’s mark where my neck meets my shoulder.

“He branded you on your first night together!” Evie squeals behind the wheel and almost crashes the car to clap her hands. “That’s so romantic!”

“Hey, watch where you’re driving!” Clara growls at her younger sister before turning back to me. When her eyes meet mine, her mood goes from irritation to joy. “I’m so happy for you, Eli. You deserve to be with Cam and hopefully, your mate bond can help with the werewolf cancer.”

I squirm in my seat. “About that… Cam wants me to see the pack doctor after the training session. He wants me to give magical roots a chance.”

“Fuck, that’s basically chemo,” Clara says. “Will you be all right taking those roots?”

“I have to….even if they will temporarily make me as weak as a human, which is bad. As Cam’s mate, I will soon be announced as the pack’s Luna, and that’s embarrassing since every pack member is going to be stronger than me.”

“Why do you care?” Evie asks, which shocks both me and her sister since she is usually always happy-go- lucky, but now, she is almost angry on my behalf. “Werewolf cancer can happen to anyone-it doesn’t mean someone is less of a werewolf, and yes, I get that a Luna should be strong, but you won’t be weak forever, Eli.”

I frown. “Lautner will definitely have something to say as Cam’s ex-girlfriend…”

“Screw that hater,” Evie says. “If she says something, ignore her.”

“What if she challenges me?” I ask. As the pack’s Luna, I can’t turn down a challenge, not if I want the pack to respect me as their Luna.

“Then you let me or Evie that that battle for you as your fighter,” Clara says. “Because trust me, I hate Lautner and her crew. It would actually feel nice being able to punch her straight in the face.”

I smile at Clara’s words. “Thanks, guys. I really appreciate your support.”

“Of course,” Evie says, her eyes meeting mine in the rearview mirror. “We’re pack, and more importantly, we’re friends. We’ve got your back, Eli.”

The support

from my besties got me feeling a bit more confident as we pull into the parking lot of the pack training grounds. I’m smiling and feeling positive.

But that changes when I step out of the car. Once my feet are on the ground, reality settles in. Pack members are already staring at me, and I just know there will be whispers, stares, and probably some outright hostility from certain pack members during the training session. I just hope Lautner won’t give me any shit today…

I’m not that lucky, though.

As soon as we walk into the forest to join the others on the open field, Lautner comes for me.

Lautner struts over with her clan of popular she-wolves close behind her. “Well, well. If it isn’t the Alpha’s new plaything. Tell me, did it feel nice being fucked by my former boyfriend? Do you feel all accomplished now that you’re together with the strongest werewolf in the city? Our Alpha?”

I tense when I see her cruel sneer, but Evie and Clara flank me protectively. Clara growls, “Back off, Lautner.”

But Lautner ignores them, her gaze fixed on me. “You may have Cam’s mark, but don’t think for a second that makes you worthy of being Luna. You’re weak, Eli. Always have been, always will be.”

I clench my fists and dig my nails into my skin, the pain the only thing preventing me from doing something I might regret, like slapping Lautner’s face. Somehow, I manage to speak to her in a calm voice instead. “My worth isn’t determined by physical strength alone.”

She laughs, the sound so mocking it hurts my heart to hear it. “Oh, please. A Luna needs to be strong enough to protect the pack. You can barely protect yourself.”

“That’s enough,” Beta Ken’s deep voice cuts through the tension, and I look up to see him approach. “We’re here to train, not bicker. Everyone, start your warm-ups.”

“This isn’t over,” Lautner growls in a low voice that only me and my friends are able to hear. “Once there’s no big man around to protect you, you’re dead for stealing my man, Eli. I’m going to challenge you to a duel and something about your scent tells me you wouldn’t win in a fight. You’re weak right now. I don’t know why or how I know that, but I would definitely beat your ass in a duel. Be prepared.”
