“Luna.” The word echoed in my head, and I found myself gripping hard onto the hem of my dress. My knuckles ached from how hard I was clenching it, and I didn’t understand why, when my mother was about to marry me off to some stranger too.
I turned to Kael, who had been silent the entire time, and he didn’t seem a bit pleased about the announcement.
His grip tightened against the fork in his hand before he dropped it with a click. A frown tugged his lips, and this time, he didn’t bother to hide his disapproval.
He didn’t show any interest in the whole preparation for his coming of age ceremony, and I had been wondering why since it was such a massive deal for someone of his status, but hearing he’d have to take Luna made something twitch inside me.
It was like an unspoken rule. He’d be crowned as the future Alpha and needed his Luna, but hearing Alpha Zane said it aloud made my stomach churned.
I should be happy he would finally have someone to distract him Someone he’d focus on and make their life miserable. That way, he would no longer care about what I do and I can finally be free, but for some weird reason, the idea of getting bullied by him doesn’t sound that bad as much as getting Luna does.
“You’re insane,” a voice said in my head.
If Kael already knew who his fated mate was, he didn’t speak about it. I didn’t think Alpha Zane cared about any of that either because it seemed he already had someone in mind.
Who could it be though? Sabrina? She was the only one who beft his status. She has all the qualities of the future Luna; bold, beautiful and unnecessarily cruel. They sure do fit each other. They’d make a perfect toxic couple.
Alpha Zane repeated himself since Kael hadn’t spoken a single word since he made the announcement. “Did you hear what I said? You’ll be choosing your Luna—”
Kael slammed his fist on the table, sending a jolt down to my bones. His eyes flared with rage as he stood up, the sound of the chair scraping through the floor filled the air.
“I’ll not be forced to pick a woman just to prove a point,” he said glaring at his father who was now wearing a frown.
“This is not up for debate. You know the rules and I’m not about to bend it just because you’re not willing to follow them.” he hissed.
“Well, fuck you and your goddamn rules because you can’t force them on me. The pack members can fuck off for all I care. but I won’t pick a woman just to impress them. The ceremony is only to prove my competence which we already know that I’m capable of.”
His muscles flexed with each word he spoke, and I have never sen him so angry. Alpha Zane rose to his feet, both glaring at each other and didn’t seem to mind that my mother and I were watching.
“Competence?” Alpha Zane snorted at his son. “Isn’t that too much grammar for someone who has everything handed over to? You don’t know a damn thing about responsibility and if youre going to become the Alpha, not only are you going to get the support of a Luna, you’ll show them how you can protect them by being loyal to the woman.”
“Bullshit!”
A green vein popped on his forehead as he threw the napkin in s hands on the table. “I see how much that works for you, yeah?”
Alpha Zane’s expression went cold, completely drained of all enotions and I knew this was my cue to leave. This was beyond a normal argument. It was leading into family matters and as much as they welcomed us into their home, I could

never see myself as a family.
I knew my bounds and I never crossed that line.
“You will do exactly as you’re told or-”
“Or what?” Kael tilted his head, challenging his father. “Or what are you going to do? Replace me?”

Alpha Zane spoke through gritted teeth. “Being an only child doesn’t earn you the Alpha title. If the pack dimmed you unworthy, you’re pretty much useless to me too. And I’m not on to raise a loser.”
Kael shook his head in disbelief. “Everything is politics to you. This is exactly why you can never be compared to mom. I wished she hadn’t left me alone with you because all you did was think about the dumbest shit!”
“Don’t you dare bring your mother into this,” Alpha Zane’s eyes darkened, and he looked like he was barely containing his anger. “Your mother would still be here if you hadn’t…”
He trailed off before he could finish his words, and I didn’t miss the horrific look on Kael’s face. He inhaled sharply, hands clenched so hard I was sure it’d hurt.
His body tensed from whatever his father was about to say and even though Alpha Zane stopped himself before he could complete the sentence, the damage had already been done.
Alpha Zane’s gaze softened the moment he noticed Kael’s expression. He tried to apologize, but Kael cut him off.
“Fuck you.”
He stormed out of the dining room, and Alpha Zane sat down looking defeated. Mom rose to her feet, running after Kael before he could leave the pack house. She held his hand, stopping him from turning the doorknob and he yanked her hands away angrily.
She almost tripped from the force, but managed to steady herself for balance.
“Kael, I was…”
“You are meddling in something that has nothing to do with you he snapped.
Mom forced out a fake smile, trying to act unaffected, but I didnt miss the change in her countenance. “I know you’re pissed, but your father only wants the best for you,” she tried to sound as calm as she could, but Kael wasn’t having any of it.
“No, you don’t know anything. You only want to act like a mothe that you’re not even to your own daughter,” he hissed. “You will never be able to replace my mother so drop the act. You’re only here to warm his bed, don’t overplay your role.”
Mom gasped at his words, but he didn’t even flinch, he shoved her out angrily and left without another word.
I knew Kael was mean, but seeing how he spoke to my mother let me in awe. He slammed the door hard behind him and I couldn’t help but wonder what happened to his mother and why he looked so hurt just by the mention of it
