NEVAEH
Alpha Zane stepped closer the moment Kael ran out of my room, and my heart pounded in my chest. If he were to kick me out right now, I’d really live on the street. Even with my little savings, I wouldn’t be able to get a place to stay immediately and I can’t afford to stay in hotels or anything. I’d go broke faster than anything, and I didn’t even have a job yet.
Fuck.
Alpha Zane dipped his weight on the bed as he sat next to me, taking me by surprise. His eyes softened as he turned to look at me with the kindest eyes anyone had ever shown me since my father’s death.
“You know that your mother didn’t mean any of that, right?” He said softly, and my throat burned.
How do I tell him that the woman he saw just now was the real Rose I knew and whoever he thought he married was nothing but an actress who had been deceiving him by playing the nice card?
“She’s just worried about your future,” he continued. “Damon may not be the easiest kid to deal with, but I assure you that no one would maltreat you or make you feel uncomfortable at the WildCrest pack.”
He held my hands, forcing me to look into his eyes and for a moment, it felt like I could tell him anything.
“Will you
also think I’m crazy if I said that I don’t want to marry Damon?” I hesitated for a while before speaking, and he shook his head.
“On the contrary, I’m actually impressed that you know what you want. You’re a smart girl, Nevaeh and your mother is proud of you. You just have to talk this out.”
I laughed at how easy he made that sound before offering him an apologetic look for coming off as rude. He thought my mom was reasonable because he hadn’t met the real version of her, but it’s not my place to tell.
“The last time he was here, he made a lot of degrading comments about me, Alpha. I don’t want to imagine how bad it’d get if I live under his roof in a pack where I have no one to call my own,” I confessed.
Bowing to people has become a norm for me that my head is always hung low like some puppy waiting for its master’s
life. order, and that is not how I intend to live the rest of my
I need to graduate with good grades and get into the best university on scholarship. Only then will my future be guaranteed.
Alpha Zane nodded slowly, listening to everything I had to say and for once, I felt… seen.
“I made a vow to my father, you know? Before he died, I promised him that I’d live a good life and become the best version of myself so he could be proud of me,” I blinked back the tears at threatened to fall as a sad smile tugged my lips.
“But considering my present situation, he’d be far from being pud. I’m barely surviving and I knew that wasn’t the kind of life my father wanted for me.”
Alpha Zane placed his hands on top of mine in a fatherly way, rubbing in gently in an attempt to calm me down.
“You’re not only smart, but you’re also dedicated and strong. Iure your father would be proud of you wherever he is.”
but
Speaking to Alpha Zane felt awfully comforting. He was the complete opposite of my mother and I couldn’t help wonder how he fell for her petty tricks and decided to be with a woman like that.
“Thank you,” I said with a smile, and I hoped he knew that I really meant that. No one had ever cared to know how I was feeling and coming here to make sure I was fine meant a lot to me.

Chapter 31
Alpha Zane patted my shoulder as he rose to his feet when he spoke again. “Why was Kael in your room?”

My breath caught. I tried to hide my trembling hands behind me as I thought of an excuse to give him. I almost thought he had forgotten about it, seeing how he didn’t mention it since heeft, but who was I kidding?
“Erm… I borrowed his textbook from school. He only came here to pick it.”
I knew I was a terrible liar and Alpha Zane was a smart man, but seriously hope he’d buy this one.
“I’m glad to see you two are finally getting along,” he said with a mile, and I released a breath I didn’t realize I was holding.
He bought the lie.
“Kael had always wanted a sister. Maybe you two can become the siblings you never had?” He raised his brows and I forced out a chuckle.
A dread settled in the pit of my stomach at the mention of siblings. That was the last thing I wanted to be with Kael, but when Alpha Zane looked at me with all of that warmth in his eyes, I nodded, giving him my fakest smile.
“It’d be nice if you finally start acting like one and protect each other,” he added, “but it shouldn’t go beyond that.”
I didn’t miss the hint of warning in his tone. My palms dampened as my heart pounded. Did he notice something?
Alpha Zane left without another word, but his words hung in the air.
I spent the entire night thinking about the kiss with Kael. He even snuck into my room after the kiss.
“That’s a first,” I giggled to myself. That should mean something right? Maybe there could be more to our relationship.
“Alpha Zane would kill you before your mother does,” a sharp voice reminded me in my head and my breath hitched.
He literally just warned me not to have any weird thoughts about his son, and here I was, imagining how good it’d feel to have his hands wrapped around my body, tucking me to sleep.
“No. This is wrong.” I shook my head at the thought, but why does it feel so right?
