I snapped my head back to see my father staring sternly at me. I almost thought he overheard Rose’s conversation with Nevaeh, but the look on his face says otherwise. If he did, I wouldn’t be the one he’d be pulling right now, which means I had been caught, and sneaking out was no longer an option.

“What do you think you’re doing?” He raised his voice, eyes accusing me of a crime I had no clue about.

“What are you talking about?” I frowned, and his face twitched into a scowl.

“I’m not a fool, kid. Don’t play dumb with me,” he sneered. “I noticed that you have been hanging around Nevaeh a little too much lately,” he said through gritted teeth.

“You barely pay her any attention, and I certainly do not appreciate this sudden change of attitude.”

“Isn’t that what you wanted?” I frowned, trying to look calm, knowing how nothing gets past my father. Just the wrong breath, and he’d know I was up to something. It was times like this that I hated how observant he was.

Lying to him was useless when he had the mind of a psychic, always reading everyone like an open book, but it was a good thing I was trained to never show what I was thinking, or I wouldn’t hear the end of my father’s lecture.

“I asked that you make her feel at home, not get too close or star entering each other’s rooms,” he hissed.

Fuck.

He hadn’t spoken about seeing me in Nevaeh’s room all this time, and I almost thought I had gotten away with this, but here we are, with my father staring into my eyes with his piercing gaze.

“What were you doing in her room?” He asked, and my heart skipped a beat. “And don’t bother to lie about taking your textbook because we both knew I didn’t buy that nonsense,” he added.

“I saw me take back my textbook, didn’t you?” I hid my trembling hands behind my back as I stared back at my father. Backing down now would mean admitting that I really did something wrong, and that was the last thing I’d ever do in front of my father.

“Really?” He furrowed his brows, looking unimpressed.

“In that case, why are you lingering so close to her room? If I hadn’t pulled you back, you were about to knock on her door, weren’t you?” He asked with a frown, and I knew I was burst.

“Give me a break!” I snapped, doing the only thing I could think of to get out of the awkward situation. “I was simply heading downstairs,” I lied, but I didn’t give him a chance to call me out as I continued speaking.

“We didn’t have another way now, do we?”

“That is not a way to speak to your father,” he snapped back.

“Well forgive me for pointing out the obvious,” I hissed. “I probably wouldn’t even notice her existence if you hadn’t married her mother and brought a bunch of strangers into our home. You never asked for my opinion before doing all of this, so stop acting like their presence makes any difference to me.”

I held my breath for a second, hoping my father wouldn’t catch how hard my heart was pounding as he stared at me, looking unconvinced.

After what felt like the most intense eye contact I had ever exchanged with my father, he finally broke the silence. He leaned closer, whispering into my ear, and my chest tightened.

“Stay away from Nevaeh,” he warned, and my body tensed. If my father already suspects something, it’d be best to give Nevaeh a space, or we wouldn’t get away with it for long.

“For the first time in a while, our family feels whole again, and I didn’t need anything to jeopardize it,” he pulled back but didn’t break eye contact.

“You’ll be getting married to Sabrina soon. Don’t mess this up,” he parted my shoulder, and I couldn’t help the surge of rage that coursed through my veins.

He was the one trying to dictate how to live my life, and yet, he thinks I’m the problem here? Unbelievable.

I stormed into my room with rage coursing through my entire body. I knew I couldn’t prolong that conversation with my father when he was already suspicious, but I couldn’t stop worrying if Nevaeh was fine after all of that.

“Is Rose really telling the truth? What if she was just bluffing?” A voice rang in my head.

As much as I didn’t want to believe that she could really kill her husband and then proceed to make her daughter’s life hell, I heard everything and I was sure as hell that woman wasn’t kidding.

I paced around the room, contemplating what to do next. Knowing how Nevaeh was, she most likely wouldn’t do anything other than cry her heart out and eventually follow her mother’s plan, but I’d die before that happened.

“What if I help her just this once?” I thought to myself. I ran my hands through my hair, trying to weigh my options, but I wasn’t sure it was entirely a good idea, especially now that my father had just warned me to stay the hell away from her.

“So you’re just going to watch her marry that bastard?”

My body went still at the thought. I knew I could never allow her to marry Damon, knowing how much of a jerk he was. He doesn’t even date girls like Nev.

He’d always go for the cheerleaders, the bitchest among them, some sophisticated mean girls, or those ready to pounce on his cock. I didn’t see Nev fitting into any of those categories.

Not only is he the worst choice for her, but he’d also ruin her and that was the last thing I’d allow under my watch.

“What if…”

An idea popped into my head and without much thinking. I grabbed my car keys and hit the road.

Every rational part of me told me how stupid what I was about to do was. I knew I shouldn’t interfere and this was my cue to take a U-turn and drive to some bar to release some steam or probably take my father’s advice and train, but my legs stepped on the accelerator, and the car roared to life.

I knew something had to be done anyway, so why not now? I just had to make sure Nevaeh doesn’t find out which she won’t.

Before I could stop myself from doing something entirely crazy. I stopped at Damon’s school parking lot. My car was the first to gain all the attention, but when I stepped outside, everyone gasped in disbelief.

“Is that Kael Drakenwood?” A girl fanned herself, her eyes glinting with tears. If I wasn’t here for something important, maybe I’d have taken a moment to wink at her or something, but Nevaeh was the reason why I had come to this shitty academy, and I needed to find that bastard.

“Omg! It’s really him,” another one slapped herself to see if she wasn’t seeing things.

Within a few seconds, almost all the students at the academy were outside to see what was happening. They parted to the side as I made my way in. I could see the envious look on the boy’s face, while the girls giggled in excitement.

Can’t blame them though, it’s not every day they get to see the famous and super-talented hockey captain, especially when the one in their academy is nothing but a douchebag.

Since Damon hadn’t shown his ugly face yet, I didn’t need to ask around to know where he’d be. Just then, two girls stopped in front of me, barely looking into my eyes as they asked for a picture.

“Not now,” I said, leaving them behind and I didn’t miss the way their cheeks flushed in embarrassment.

I finally found Damon making out with some Barbie at his locker room, and I couldn’t help be snort. This was the bastard they were going to marry her off to. Damon is only capable of doing one thing, ruining others and Nevach wouldn’t survive a day with him.

He pulled away to see who it was, and the girl released a frustrated groan. Her eyes widened when she saw who it was, but I had no business entertaining whoever he was fucking.

His eyes flickered with confusion when he saw me before they twitched into a smirk. “Wanna join us?”
