My hands snapped to my neck to feel the nick cut on it, and I couldn’t believe what had just happened. Kael and I were so close to having sex and as if that wasn’t enough. I allowed him to mark me.
What the hell was I thinking? How am I going to hide the mark from my mother? What is going to happen if anyone finds out what happened here tonight? I rose to my feet, getting dressed hurriedly as I paced around the cave nervously.
There was no way my mother would let me off the hook so easily. She’d definitely kick me out once she found out, and I couldn’t believe that I allowed my emotions to get the best of me
As much as I hated the idea of living in the pack house in the beginning or staying under the same roof with Kael, I had gotten so comfortable in there that I didn’t know what to do if my mother chased me away now.
“You’re such a hypocrite,” a sharp voice said in my head, and honestly, I didn’t care if I was being one.
I had imagined my mother chasing me out on different occasions, but now that there was a high chance of it happening, I couldn’t help the dread feeling that crawled in the pit of my stomach
I looked over at Kael, who was sitting calmly on the floor as if nothing ever happened. This felt wrong in every way I could think of. How can he look so relaxed?
“My mother would kill me for this,” I blurted, running my hands through my hair when he finally spoke.
“No, she won’t,” he said as a matter of fact. I shook my head rapidly, knowing he was only saying this because the woman he knew was the one that always wore a fake smile and pretended to be the nicest person anyone could ever encounter in front of him and Alpha Zane, but she had always been a complete witch with me, so I knew there was no way this could end well.
“You don’t get it,” I muttered, biting my fingernails anxiously. “She will get rid of anything that stands in her way, even if it’s me.”
Kael rose to his feet, looking me dead in the eyes. “Your mom won’t lay a figure on you and I’d rather get disowned by my father and lose my title as the future Alpha than let any harm come to you.”
He didn’t stutter. Not that I expected him to do so, but when he spoke with so much assurance, a part of me wanted to believe him even though I knew it wouldn’t be that easy.
I can’t have him ruin his life for me, I didn’t deserve it.
I was about to speak again, when he turned sharply, and I wondered what was going on. I still couldn’t believe how he went from being on the blink of death to looking completely fine within a second.
“It seemed Father’s guards are here,” he said, turning back to face me and my heart skipped a beat. There was no way I’d be able to explain what happened here if anyone saw the mark on my neck.
I tore the material of my dress, wrapping it around my neck as prayed vehemently that no one would take note of it.
“Come on,
let’s go outside,” Kael said, holding my hands as we walked out but released me before the guards could see us.
“Over here!” He yelled and I didn’t miss the relief that dawned their exhausted faces.
“We’ve found him!” One of them yelled to the others who were ill in the woods searching, and I didn’t know what to feel.
I didn’t look at Kael once as we made our way home. The guards stationed themselves everywhere. Some were walking in front of us, while others trailed behind us, and yet, all I could think of was what’d happen to me once my mother saw the
mark.

She’s too fucking observant. I know she’d recognize it as soon as he saw it, and that’d be the end. Even though Kael had just promised to protect me, I doubt he’d be able to do anything on the truth was revealed.
“Kael!” Alpha Zane rushed over to our side, holding his son firm, as he scanned his body for any injury. “Thank goodness you’re safe,” he breathed out, before pulling him into a hug, and forgot about my problems for a moment.
Contrary to what Kael had told me, Alpha Zane looked relieved could never get from my mother, even if I was covered in blood
see he was alive and healthy, and that was a reaction I laying lifeless on the cold floor.
“What happened? How did you…” Alpha Zane stopped himself before he could ask any more questions. He turned to the healer and demanded that he take care of Kael.
Kael tried to inform his father that he was fine, but he wasn’t having any of it. He eventually followed the healer and only then did I notice most of the guests were gone.
I felt invisible the entire time. No one spared me a look or even tried to see if I was okay. Not even my mother. Alpha Zane called for a council meeting, and I knew it was my cue to leave.
I paced around my room thinking about the worst that could happen if anyone found out that I had been marked by my supposed stepbrother, when he was supposed to be mated to another woman tonight.
The guilt was eating me alive even though I owe no loyalty to Sabrina, I knew some lines should have never been crossed.
Just then, the door creaked open, snapping me out of my trance and I jumped back when I saw that it was my mother.
She didn’t look surprised at my reaction, and my stomach curled violently. I’m so fucking dead. She knew.
I rubbed my clammy hands against my dress, thinking of the lie could tell her in advance, but nothing seemed to be coming to me.
She lurched forward, and I anticipated her to unleash her wrath on me, when a huge smile spread across her face. I stumbled back, wondering what was happening, when she cupped my cheeks in her hand, giving me the fakest smile I had
ever seen.
“Are you okay? Did you get hurt? I’m so proud of you today,” she said, grinning from ear to ear and I wondered if she hit her head or something.
“I’m fine,” I said, taking a step back and she nodded, looking pleased.
“I’m glad you are,” she leaned forward to touch my hair, and I stepped back simultaneously.
“What’s going on?” I asked wearily, and she clapped her hands like some excited kid that was offered candy.
“Kael informed his father that you were the one who saved him, and to say Alpha Zane was delighted about this news is an understatement. You managed to do what all his garden couldn’t do, and I’m super proud of you.”
I nodded, feeling a bit relieved that she hadn’t found out about hel and I as she continued to speak. “Just keep up with this attitude and maybe I wouldn’t have to send you away,” she said, inning.
“The closer Alpha and I become, the more everyone would respet me. He just praised me in front of the council,” she said with an amused smile. “Do you know what that means?”
I didn’t care about her relationship with Alpha Zane, but right now, I needed her to get the fuck out of my room before I get caught.
She’s shameless enough to come here and ask me to play nice shat Alpha will continue to hold her in high regard. All she cared about was people’s validation. It was one of the reasons why she killed my father in the first place and watching her laughing like a maniac annoys the hell out of me, but instead of elling her exactly how I feel, I forced out a smile, agreeing
with her bullshit.

“I need to rest,” I drawled. Watching her acting so shamelessly de bile rush to my throat and I needed her out of my sight.
“You should…”
I pushed her towards the door, not caring about whatever nonsense she had left to say.
“Don’t be so ungrateful!” she hissed, as I pushed the door open, ut before I could make her leave, her eyes darted to the material tied to my neck and my breath caught.
She seemed to notice the sudden change in my breath and I knew it was my chance to push her out. Before I could toss her out, she yanked the material away from my neck and my body ran cold.
