Chapter 16 No Children
Elijah looked a bit older than he had back then, but his presence hadn’t weakened at all. A single glance from him was enough to make anyone replay every step they’d just taken, wondering if they’d made a mistake.
The old business legend had never earned that title by accident.
“Elijah, I’m sorry. Back then I…”
Elijah lowered his gaze and shook his head. “Katherine, you don’t need to apologize to me. I know Lucas messed up first. He failed you.
“I saw everything he did, and I’ve already disciplined him for it. But the divorce agreement you left behind back then, he never signed it.”
As Elijah spoke, he lifted his hand slightly. George took out the divorce agreement from five years ago and placed it in front of Katherine.
Katherine frowned. She hadn’t expected Lucas to never sign it.
Why?
He loves Rachel so much. He should’ve been eager to dvorce me and marry Rachel.
“Katherine,” Elijah continued, “you left in a hurry back then. Now I want to ask you: Is there any way you and Lucas can make it work?”
Hearing that, Katherine shook her head. “Back then, you asked me to marry Lucas to repay my father’s kindness and give me a lifelong shelter. But Lucas doesn’t love me. Continuing this marriage would be torture for both of us. I don’t want to stay with a man who doesn’t love me. So I’m sorry. I can’t live up to your good intentions. I can’t continue this marriage.”
“You’re insisting on a divorce?”
“Yes,” Katherine answered firmly.
Elijah nodded. He knew Katherine’s personality well.
Her leaving back then had already been her decision.
“In the end, Lucas wronged you.”
Elijah lifted his hand again, and George placed another document in front of Katherine.
It was also a divorce agreement.

“Katherine, I respect your decision. I won’t force you to continue this marriage with Lucas.
Take a look at this divorce agreement.”
Katherine picked it up, a trace of wariness in her eyes.
She knew Elijah cared for her.
But a lifetime of shrewdness meant Elijah’s affection was never without limits.
Sure enough.
Her own divorce agreement back then asked for nothing. She only wanted the divorce.
But Elijah’s agreement offered her 10% of Grant Enterprise shares, 10 billion in assets, a villa, and several commercial properties downtown.
The settlement was astonishingly generous.
But when Katherine saw the final clause, stating that children’s custody would belong to the father, her heart skipped violently.
“Katherine,” Elijah said, “everything listed here is compensation from the Grants.”
Katherine’s heart pounded as she put the agreement down. “What’s this? Custody goes to the father? What children?”
Elijah sighed softly. “Katherine, the Grants owe you. I will compensate you as much as I can within reason. But you can’t take away our bloodline. The children must return to the Grants.”
His tone was gentle and unhurried, sounding like a discussion. But to Katherine, there was no room for negotiation at all.
Elijah’s affection had boundaries.
And the Grant bloodline was that boundary.
He could make it up to her with money, with assets.
But the children had to stay.
That was nonnegotiable.
Katherine kept her composure, her clear eyes meeting Elijah’s. “You must be joking. I already aborted the children back then. I don’t have any children.”

“Well, whether you believe it or not, I really did abort the children back then. I can’t sign this divorce agreement.”
Elijah looked at Katherine quietly. He wasn’t angry. “Katherine, you understand me, and I understand you. Think it over again. There’s no rush to answer.”
“My answer is that there are no children to speak of.” Katherine made her stance clear.
