At Katherine’s house, the other children’s parents had come to pick them all up.

Katherine sat on the couch in a daze, still not recovered from what had happened during the day.

“Katherine, are you okay?”

Megan came over and squeezed her shoulder.

Katherine turned around. “Are they asleep?”

“They played all day and were exhausted. They re all out. Today was way too close.”

“Yeah. What are we going to do now?”

Megan sat down beside her. “They already came once. They won’t come again … right?”

“What worries me is Rachel. How did she find out Ivy is my daughter?”

“Maybe she accidentally saw you out together one of those times?”

Katherine rubbed her aching temples. “Maybe.

Early the next morning.

Katherine was still shaken from the day before, hervous and uneasy as she took the kids to

school.

Megan noticed Katherine didn’t look well and reached out to feel her forehead.

Sure enough. Burning hot.

“You have a fever?”

Katherine touched her own face and grabbed a bottle of water from the car.

“A little.”

“A little? Your forehead could fry an egg. Come on, we’re going to the hospital.”

“I’m fine. I already took some fever medicine. Il go down soon.

Megan blinked. “How did you suddenly get sick Don’t tell me it was from yesterday’s scare?”

Katherine thinned her pale lips.

Because of yesterday, she’d had nightmares all night.

Lucas and Rachel were chasing her and the triplets like monsters, screaming that she’d never see her children again.

She had woken up drenched in sweat several times. By the time she finally fell back asleep, the sun was already coming up.

“Seriously? It really was the scare.” Megan started the car as she talked. “Let’s go to the hospital. If you go down, what happens to the kids?”

Katherine didn’t argue this time.

They went to the hospital, got the medicine, an Katherine went home.

“Your flight’s at noon. Is everything packed?”

“I changed it. Pushed it to 6 p.m. I’m not comfortable leaving you like this.”

Katherine straightened up. “I’m fine, really.”

“It’s already changed. Stop fussing.”

Katherine pressed her lips together gently, eyes full of gratitude. “Megan, thank you.”

“Oh, stop being mushy. I’m not doing it for you I’m doing it for my godchildren.”

Katherine smiled softly. She took her medicine and drowsiness set in. Feeling drained, she leaned back on the couch and slowly closed her eyes.

By the time Katherine woke up, it was exactly noon.

She touched her forehead. The fever had gone own a little.

Megan’s flight was at 6 p.m. Katherine left at 4.30 p.m. to take her to the airport,

Megan was still uneasy. “Katherine, are you sure you’ll be okay on your own?”

“I’ll be fine. Go on, get in there.”

Megan bit her lip. “Alright. I’m going then. I’ll come back to visit you all. No-actually. hoping you’ll all come to me soon.”

With the paternity test results out, Katherine felt a bit more at ease. At least, it had dispelled Lucas’s suspicions. He wouldn’t be watching her every second anymore.

She watched Megan go inside, then turned to get in the car. Just then, her phone rang. Katherine looked at the screen-it was the school.

Pickup time was 5.30 p.m. It was only 5 p.m. now. Why would the school be calling?

Katherine answered the call with a sense of unease. “Hello, this is Ivy’s mother. What happened?”

“What? Ivy is missing?”

The teacher was talking fast and frantically, but Katherine couldn’t make out how exactly Ivy had disappeared.

There was no time for more questions. Katherine started the car and headed straight for the school.

Megan came sprinting out with her phone, yanked the car door open, and jumped in. “Go to the school, now.”

Katherine saw the phone in Megan’s hand-shed just hung up a call. The school had left Megan’s number, too, so they’d obviously called her as well.

Katherine was about to say something, but Megan cut in first. “Whether I fly back or not doesn’t matter. Finding the child is what’s important.”

It was urgent. Katherine didn’t say anything more and drove immediately.

The teachers had searched the school from top to bottom.

They hadn’t found her.
