“Of course, I know her. Your mommy’s name is Katherine, right?”

Ivy’s little face froze. “No, that’s wrong.”

How did he know her mommy’s name?

Ivy had never told anyone her mommy’s name was Katherine. And Katherine would never say it herself.

Ivy sensed something was off and turned to run

The man had been disguised as a security guard observing Ivy for a long time. Right now, it was class time, and the hallway was empty. He’d worked hard to find this chance, and he wasn’t about to let her go.

He pulled a cloth from his pocket-prepared in advance-and rushed forward, scooping Ivy up and pressing it over her nose and mouth.

“Help-”

Ivy managed one cry.

But it was drowned out by the noise of children playing inside the classrooms.

Ivy’s last thought was that she was done for, and then everything went dark.

The man carried Ivy and left quickly. His accomplice, watching from the shadows, saw that the job was done and immediately arranged the getaway.

By now, Ivy had already been taken to a small room.

Her head swam. She wanted to speak but couldn’t make a sound. She could barely crack her eyes open to thin slits.

She could hear people talking around her.

“Ms. Hart, what do you want us to do with this kid?”

“Katherine’s kid? Killing her would be too easy. You people do this for a living-is to make it more painful?”

“We could sell her to some remote mountain town…”

“No. I remember there’s something even worse. Something about cutting out her tong

Rachel’s words were vague, but the man understood. He glanced at Ivy. “You want us to cripple her?”

In their line of work-child trafficking-there was an especially cruel method: disfigure the children, cripple them, then dump them on the streets to beg for money by using their pitiful appearance to attract sympathy.

But this method was rarely used anymore. Usually, it was reserved for children with poor looks. A child like this one-fair, pretty, the kind anyone would call adorable-would normally be sold to a family that wanted a kid. She’d fetch a good price.

“Yes. She helped her mother hurt me. I want he never to be able to speak again. Her mother wants to use her to get back into the Grants? I want her to stand right in front of her mother and have her mother not even recognize her.

“Alright, get started. Remember, the more she suffers, the more I pay.”

Hearing the woman, the two men looked back a Ivy. Greed gleamed in their eyes. Without hesitation, they said, “Yes, ma’am. We’ll do as you say. As for the money…”

“You’ll get every penny.” The woman turned and left.

Ivy couldn’t make out the face of that woman, but her voice sounded familiar.

The two men escorted the woman out. The door opened and then closed again.

Ivy moved her little hand, trying to push herself up. But the moment she got any height, her weak little arms gave out and she collapsed back down.

At five years old, Ivy already understood what kidnapping meant.

Ivy also knew this time was different from when Lucas had taken her.

Lucas wouldn’t hurt her. He even bought her lots of candy to make her happy.

But this time was different. These people wanted to hurt her.

The innocent, trusting Ivy didn’t understand why anyone would want to hurt her.

All she knew was that she might never see Katherine again. Or her brothers. Or Meg creepy man, or even Lucas…

Katherine must be so worried right now. Her brothers might be crying.

She suddenly felt so sad.

The two men came back quickly. Ivy felt the light dim as two tall shadows loomed over her.

“Well, well, the little girl’s crying.”

“Heard what we said earlier, huh?”

“Kid, don’t blame us. We gotta make a living, too. Once we finish with you, the payout will keep us comfortable for a good while.”

“Quit talking. Let’s get this done and get paid.”

With that, the two men walked over to a side area, pulled on the extra-long waterproof aprons used in slaughterhouses, put on gloves, and picked up a wooden club from the corner –still crusted with dried blood-and walked toward Ivy…

A five-year-old child going missing at school was no small matter. The school had already called the police before contacting Katherine.

They’d checked the surveillance. Nothing unusual. They could see Ivy telling her teacher she was going to the restroom, walking out, and then never coming back. No one was seen leaving the school grounds. But she was simply gone.

Ivy had always been well-protected. Back in Yarbrough, she’d never been in danger, and no one dared touch her. Katherine had never imagined that one day Ivy would just vanish.

The school couldn’t find her, and there was no sign of anyone leaving campus. The news made Katherine’s heart race, a terrible feeling taking hold.

“Ivy’s mother, please try not to panic. We’ve already called the police. They’ll find her.”

Katherine’s eyes were red. She stared at the teacher. “My child goes missing at your and you think you don’t owe me an explanation?”

“I…” The teacher was on the verge of tears herself. She had never expected anything to happen.

Katherine pressed her lips tight and took a deep breath. She knew now was not the point fingers.
