My Billionaire Ex Wants Me Back (Katherine) novel Chapter 7

Chapter 7 Face to Face

Cath.

Twenty-nine years old.

Married.

Joined the auction house five years ago…

“Fred!”

Fred had just finished dealing with the car when he was called into the study. “Mr. Grant, what’s wrong?”

“These files are exactly the same as the first set you gave me.”

Fred looked troubled. It wasn’t that he hadn’t tried. This was everything that could be found.

And aside from this, he honestly didn’t know what else there was to investigate.

“This is all we could find on Ms. Cath. Beyond this, it’s just her auction records from the past few years. Mr. Grant, isn’t this what you wanted?”

Lucas frowned at the question.

The file was thorough, but the result still wasn’t what he wanted.

He couldn’t shake the feeling that Cath resembled Katherine.

Cath. Katherine.

Even their names were almost the same.

Yet the investigation showed no connection to Katherine at all.

Was I overthinking it?

Something still felt wrong.

There were plenty of people in Crestburg who understood antiques, yet Elijah had insisted on sending him all the way to Yarbrough to bring this woman back.

Grandpa must have a reason.

Lucas frowned, picked up his phone, and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window. Watching a car pull away quickly below, he dialed Elijah.

The call connected.

In a low voice, Lucas asked, “Grandpa, who exactly is that auctioneer?”

“Did you meet her?”

“I did.”

Elijah was silent for a few seconds, then sighed. “Looks like during those three years, you truly didn’t care about Katherine at all. Otherwise, how could she stand right in front of you and you still not realize she was your wife?”

Lucas’s brow tightened. “Katherine?”

Five years at the auction house. A white veil, never showing her face. That familiar feeling. Cath.

Katherine.

Lucas’s expression turned colder by the second.

Cath is Katherine.

My instincts were right.

That’s why Grandpa insisted I come personally and bring her back.

Lucas narrowed his eyes dangerously. No wonder I haven’t been able to find her for five years. She changed her name and hid herself here.

She recognized me the moment we met at the auction house, which was why she left so decisively.

Her cold expression flashed through his mind. Anger surged in Lucas’s chest.

She hid well.

“Lucas, bring Katherine back.”

“Alright.”

Lucas hung up and strode out.

Fred had no idea what had happened.

He only felt the aura around Lucas suddenly turn terrifying.

He’d only felt this kind of pressure once before, five years ago, when Lucas found out Katherine had aborted the child and wanted a divorce.

Rachel had just reached Lucas’s door when she saw him heading out. She tried to stop him, but Lucas didn’t spare her a glance.

She hurriedly grabbed Fred. “Where are you going?”

“I’m not sure either.”

Fred rushed after Lucas.

Rachel frowned. She hadn’t seen Lucas this urgent in a long time.

What happened?

Lucas got into the car and called the auction house manager, Leland.

“Mr. Grant.”

“Is Cath at the auction house?”

“Cath’s on leave, Mr. Grant. If you’re looking to hire someone to appraise antiques, or-”

“There’s no time to talk. Julian, Ethan, Ivy, go with Megan first. I will meet up with you soon

Katherine wasn’t afraid of facing Lucas. She was afraid that if Lucas found her, he’d follow the trail straight to the kids.

He had the means. She knew it.

And Katherine absolutely could not let him discover the children and take them away.

Seeing how anxious she was, the three kids obediently followed Megan.

“Mommy, be careful.”

“I will.”

Katherine drove quickly back to her duplex apartment. She didn’t even turn on the lights. She rushed upstairs to her room, grabbed her documents from the closet, and headed out.

But the moment she reached the first floor, her body stiffened.

In the darkness, a small flame flickered.

The faint smell of smoke drifted over.

Katherine’s heart skipped a beat.

“You running away?”

A low voice slowly sounded.

She knew that voice.

By the moonlight spilling in from outside, Katherine saw the man sitting on the couch. She’d been in too much of a hurry to notice him when she came in.

Her mind went blank.

Click.

The lights turned on.

The sudden brightness made Katherine instinctively close her eyes. When she opened them, Lucas was sitting there arrogantly on the couch, a cigarette between his long fingers, exhaling smoke slowly. His dark, deep eyes were fixed on her, sharp enough to tear her apart.

Katherine’s body went stiff.

Sure enough.

He really found out.

Not only has he discovered who I am, but he tracked me all the way here.

She forced herself to control her emotions, refusing to let him see her panic.

The living room and kitchen were downstairs, the bedrooms upstairs. Katherine didn’t know if Lucas had gone upstairs. If he had, the secret of the three children would be impossible to hide.

“It’s been five years,” Lucas said slowly. “Should I call you Katherine now, or Cath?”
