The pain in Emma’s grip woke me at 2 AM.
“Jeremy.” Her voice was tight, controlled. “It’s time.”
I was instantly alert, the grogginess vanishing. “Time? The pup? But you’re not due for another two weeks-”
“Tell that to our child.” Another contraction hit and she squeezed my hand hard enough to make bones grind. “Call Dr. Reeves. Now.”
I fumbled for my phone, already dialing the pack doctor while helping Emma sit up. This was happening. Our pup was coming. Two weeks early but apparently ready to meet the world.
Dr. Reeves answered on the second ring. “Jeremy? What’s wrong?”
“Emma’s in labor. Contractions are about five minutes apart.”
“I’ll meet you at the hospital in ten minutes. Get her there safely.”
I was helping Emma stand, grabbing the prepared hospital bag, mentally running through everything we’d planned, when I heard it.
Footsteps on the porch. Multiple sets. Moving with purpose.
My wolf surged forward, protective instincts flaring. Someone was at our door at 2 AM while my mate was in labor.
“Jeremy, what-” Emma started.
“Stay here.” I moved toward the door, every sense on high alert.
Before I could reach it, there was a knock. Polite. Measured. Utterly at odds with the time and circumstances.
I opened the door to find Lord Castellan on my porch, flanked by four of his vampire warriors. All of them looked disheveled- unusual for vampires who normally maintained perfect composure. Blood stained their clothes. Not their own blood, I noted, But still.
“Lord Castellan.” I kept my voice level despite the rage building in my chest. “This is a really bad time. My mate is in labor-

“I’m aware. I can hear her heartbeat and the pup’s from here.” His expression was serious, none of his usual Jeremy, I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t urgent. I need to call in my debt. Tonight.”

The words hit like a physical blow. “You’re calling it in now? While my mate is having our child?”
“Not by choice. But circumstances have forced my hand.” He glanced back at his warriors. “We’re under attack. Hunters have found our coven’s main stronghold. Professional, well–equipped hunters with silver weapons and fire. We need sanctuary.
Immediately.”
“Sanctuary?” I processed that. “You want to bring your coven onto pack lands?”
“Temporarily. Just until we can eliminate the hunter threat and secure our territory.” His dark eyes met mine. “Jeremy, I have sixty vampires–warriors, non–combatants, children–who need protection. The hunters attacked at dawn yesterday. We’ve been fighting and evacuating for twenty hours straight. We’re running out of options.”
“Jeremy?” Emma appeared in the doorway, one hand on her belly, her face pale with pain and worry. “What’s happening?”
“Lord Castellan is calling in my debt.” I turned to her. “Emma, we need to get you to the hospital–**

“I heard.” Another contraction hit and she gripped the doorframe. “Hunters. He needs sanctuary.”
“This can wait until after the pup is born,” Lord Castellan said, surprising me. “jeremy, take care of your mate. We can hold out for a few more hours. But after that”
“No.” Emma’s voice was firm despite the pain. “You said you need sanctuary immediately. People–vampires are dying while we stand here talking.”
“Emma, you’re in labor-”
“And I’ll be in labor for hours yet. First babies take time.” She looked at Lord Castellan. “How many vampires need sanctuary?”
“Sixty. Including twelve children under the age of fifty.”
“Vampire children?” I hadn’t even considered that vampires had children.
