Dr. Sarah Chen sat in the interrogation room a space normally used for rogue questioning–looking smaller than I’d ever seen her. Her hands were cuffed to the table, silver–lined to prevent any supernatural interference, though as a human she posed no physical threat.

But she’d posed every other kind of threat. Had weaponized our trust. Had put Grace at risk.

I stood behind the two–way mirror with Grace in my arms, watching as Jeremy and Lord Castellan entered the room. I’d insisted on being present but agreed to stay out of sight until the right moment. Grace needed to nurse soon anyway, and Lord Castellan thought my presence would be more impactful as a reveal.

“Dr. Chen.” Jeremy’s voice was cold. Professional. The future Alpha, not the patient she’d counseled. “Thank you for coming in.

“That you’ve been feeding intelligence to hunter organizations for the past six weeks.” Lord Castellan’s voice was smooth, almost conversational. “That you told them about Emma’s labor. About Grace’s birth. That you provided information that directly led to yesterday’s attack.”

“No. No, that’s not I would never-” But her protests were weak, unconvincing.

Jeremy opened the folder, spreading photos across the table. “This is you meeting with Hunter Commander Marcus Webb. Three times in the past month. These are transcripts of your phone conversations. And this-” He placed a final document in front of her. “This is the message you sent at 2:47 AM yesterday morning, telling them exactly where Emma was and when she’d be most vulnerable.”

Dr. Chen stared at the evidence, tears streaming down her face. “You don’t understand. They have my daughter. My grandchildren. They said they’d kill them if I didn’t cooperate.”

“We understand perfectly.” Lord Castellan sat across from her, his expression unreadable. “You made a choice to protect your family at the expense of your patients. At the expense of a newborn child.”

“I didn’t think I didn’t know they’d actually attack the hospital. They said they just wanted information. That they were tracking supernatural movements for research purposes.” Her voice was desperate now. “I didn’t know people would die.” “Research purposes?” Jeremy’s voice rose with anger. “Dr. Chen, they’re hunters. Professional killers who specialize in exterminating supernatural creatures. What did you think they’d do with detailed intelligence about pack vulnerabilities?”

“I don’t know! I wasn’t thinking clearly! They had my family!” She was sobbing now. “My daughter. My grandbabies. They’re all I have. What was I supposed to do?”

Behind the glass, I felt my own tears starting again. Because I understood. God help me, I understood the impossible choice she’d faced. If someone had threatened Grace, what wouldn’t I do?

But understanding didn’t equal forgiveness.

“You were supposed to come to us,” Jeremy said. “To tell us your family was threatened. We could have helped. Could have protected them. Instead, you chose to betray people who trusted you.”

The relief that flooded Dr. Chen’s face was almost painful to watch. “They’re safe? Really safe?”
