“It’s exactly what you did to us, “I said, my voice carrying through the speaker system from the observation room. “You made us vulnerable. Made my daughter vulnerable. Now you get to choose: help fix the damage you caused, or face the consequences of your betrayal.”

“Emma?” Dr. Chen looked toward the mirror, though she couldn’t see me. “Emma, I’m so sorry. I never wanted to hurt you. Any of you. I was just trying to save my family.”

“So was I.” I adjusted Grace in my arms. “Jeremy, I’m coming in.”

Before he could argue, I handed Grace to my father–who’d been standing guard in the observation room–and entered the interrogation room.

Dr. Chen’s face crumpled further when she saw me. “Emma. Oh god, Emma. You just gave birth. You should be resting—”

“I should be enjoying my daughter’s first days. Instead, I’m here confronting the woman I trusted with my deepest fears and vulnerabilities.” I moved closer to the table. “The woman who used everything I told her to help people who wanted to kill my baby.”

“I didn’t know they’d target Grace specifically. I swear, I didn’t—”

“You told them I was in labor. What did you think would happen?” My voice was shaking now, anger and hurt bleeding through. “Dr. Chen, I trusted you. Told you things I haven’t told anyone. About feeling worthless. About the nightmares. About being terrified Jeremy would choose Vanessa over me. And you–you took all of that and-

“I know.” Her voice was barely a whisper. “Emma, I know I betrayed you. Betrayed everything a therapist should be. And I will regret it for the rest of my life. But please please believe me when I say the therapy was real. The work we did together, the healing–that was all genuine. I may have reported information to the hunters, but I never lied to you about your relationship.”

“How am I supposed to believe that? How am I supposed to trust anything you said?”

“You can’t. I understand that. I destroyed that trust completely” Dr. Chen looked down at her cuffed hands. “But Emma, the progress you and Jeremy made–that was real. You did the work. You rebuilt trust despite having a traitor as your therapist. That says more about your strength than my failure.”

Lord Castellan had said something similar. The words didn’t hurt any less hearing them from Dr. Chen.

“My daughter almost died because of you,” I said quietly. “Hunters came for her specifically. If Jeremy hadn’t been there, if your father hadn’t protected the safe room- My voice broke. “She’s one day old, and she almost didn’t make it to day two because you chose your family over ours.”

“I know. And Emma, if I could go back, if I could make different choices-

“But you can’t. None of us can.” I wiped my eyes roughly. “So now you have to make a choice going forward. Help us destroy the hunters who threatened your family and ours. Or die knowing you accomplished nothing except getting wolves killed.”

“If I cooperate–if I do what you’re asking–my family will really be safe?”

“Safer than they were with the hunters,” Lord Castellan confirmed. “My people are very good at protection. The hunters wor

find them.”

“And after? After the hunters are dealt with?”

“Exile,” Jeremy said. “You’ll never be allowed on pack territory again. Never be allowed contact with anyone in this pack. You’ll have your family and your freedom, but you’ll be dead to us.‘

Dr. Chen took a shaky breath. “That’s more mercy than I deserve.”

“Yes. It is.” I leaned on the table. “But Dr. Chen, if you betray us again—if you warn the hunters, if you compromise this operation in any way–there won’t be a third chance. We’ll execute you and your family will be on their own. Do you understand?
