“Daddy-” Grace was pressed against the monitor now. “Daddy, be careful-”

The fight between Alpha Jeremy and Thomas Vex was vicious. Alpha against extremist leader. Father protecting family against wolf trying to destroy it.

Thomas was good. Better than good. He moved like someone with military training, coordinating his pack tactics with individual skill.

But Alpha Jeremy was fighting for his daughter. Fighting with the desperate fury of a father whose child was being threatened.

It wasn’t close.

Alpha Jeremy’s jaws found Thomas’s throat. One decisive bite. Blood everywhere.

Thomas Vex went down. And didn’t get back up.

On the monitors, the Preservation Front forces saw their leader fall. Saw Lord Castellan back on his feet despite silver wounds, saw forty Trent pack wolves surrounding the remaining attackers, saw twenty vampires closing in with lethal efficiency.

They broke. Scattered. Running for the perimeter, for escape, abandoning their assault in complete collapse.

“It’s over,” Victoria said. “The Preservation Front assault just failed catastrophically.”

Grace was crying. Relief and fear and overwhelming emotion all mixed together. “They’re okay? Daddy and Uncle Cas are okay?”

Luna Emma was checking another monitor. “Your father is wounded but moving. Lord Castellan is-” She paused. “He’s walking toward the house. Grace, they’re both alive.”

Ten minutes later, the all–clear sounded.

We emerged from the basement to find the pack house in organized chaos. Wounded being treated. Prisoners being secured. Victory being processed.

Alpha Jeremy was in the main room, bleeding from multiple wounds but standing. Directing cleanup. Making sure his pack was accounted for.

Grace ran to him. “Daddy-”

He caught her in a one–armed hug, the other arm clearly injured. “I’m okay, baby girl. We’re all okay.”

Lord Castellan entered, looking worse than Alpha Jeremy. Silver burns across his shoulder and side, moving carefully but under his own power. “Grace. You’re safe.”

“I’m healing. Vampires heal fast.” He looked at Alpha Jeremy “Thomas Vex is dead. The Preservation Front assault has failed. Twelve of their wolves are captured. Three dead including Thomas. The rest fled but we’re tracking them.”

“Courtney?” I asked before I could stop myself.

“Was not part of the assault.” Lord Castellan’s voice was careful. “Connor, Courtney gave us accurate intelligence about the Preservation Front. Warned us they might attack early. She’s- she’s cooperating fully. Even if it means betraying her father’s organization.”

Grace looked at me. “Courtney helped us?”

“Apparently.” I was processing that. Courtney–who’d attacked Grace with a knife, who’d given extremists her schedule–had turned around and given intelligence that helped stop them. “I don’t–I don’t understand-”

“Courtney is complicated,” Lord Castellan said. “Made terrible choices. Then made better ones. That doesn’t excuse what she did. But it does mean she’s not entirely the villain here.”

Alpha Jeremy sat down heavily, wincing. “The Preservation Front is broken. Thomas Vex is dead. Their leadership is captured or scattered. Grace-” He looked at his daughter. “You’re safe. This threat is over.”

“Over?” Grace’s voice was small. “Daddy, you’re sure it’s over?”

“The immediate threat is over. There might be remnants of the organization out there. Might be individual extremists who still oppose integration. But the coordinated assault capacity— the ability to actually threaten you—that’s done.” He pulled her close with his good arm.” Baby girl, you’re safe.”

She collapsed against him, crying—relief and delayed fear and overwhelming gratitude all at

I stood with Luna Emma and Nate, watching. My mate was safe. Her father was wounded but alive. Lord Castellan was hurt but healing.

The Preservation Front had attacked early, trying to catch us unprepared. Instead they’d found a family ready to fight. Ready to protect. Ready to prove that love–complicated, cross- species, choose–your–own–family love–was stronger than hate.

Thomas Vex was dead. The extremist leader who’d called Grace “inappropriate mate material” had died trying to kidnap her.
