Grace fell asleep quickly, exhausted from the day. I lay beside her, my hand on her belly, feeling our son move.
“Hey, little man,” I whispered. “H’s your dad. I know you can’t understand this yet. But want you to know–I want you to grow up in a world where having a vampire great-uncle is normal. Where integration isn’t controversial, it’s just-life. Where no one threatens you for existing in a family that chose love over tradition.”
Another kick against my hand. Like he was listening. Like he understood.
“I can’t promise that world will be perfect when you’re born. Elena’s followers are still out there. Still believing their ideology. Still possibly planning–something. But I can promise-“I stopped, emotion tightening my throat. “I can promise that your mom and I will fight for you. That Grandpa Jeremy and Grandma Emma will protect you. That Great Uncle Cas will eliminate any threat that tries to hurt you. That you’ll grow up knowing you’re loved and wanted and absolutely worth every fight.”
Grace stirred in her sleep, her hand finding mine. Even unconscious, seeking connection.
“We’re going to be okay,” I said to both of them. “All three of us. You’re going to be born in two months. You’re going to grow up strong and brave and completely normal despite what extremists want. You’re going to prove that integration works. That love transcends species boundaries. That the future your mom and I fought for is real.”
I hoped I was right. Hoped that Elena’s execution had ended the immediate threat. Hoped that her followers would stay in the shadows forever instead of emerging for revenge. Hoped that by the time our son was old enough to understand politics, the opposition to integration would have faded into history.
But even if I was wrong-even if extremists remained-we’d handle it.
The way Grace’s family had handled Thomas Vex and the Preservation Front and Elena Frost. The way they’d handled every
threat for nineteen years.
Together. With love and protection and absolute refusal to let extremism win.
Our son would grow up safe. Would grow up knowing his vampire great-uncle was family. Would grow up in the integrated
world we’d built.
I had to believe that. Had to trust that all the fighting, all the protection, all the vigilance would be enough.
Because the alternative-living in constant fear, letting Elena’s ideology shape how we raised our son–that was letting
extremists win even from the grave.
So I chose hope. Chose to believe in the future Grace and I were building. Chose to trust that our son would grow up in a better
world than the one we’d inherited.
Peace might not come in his childhood. Might not come in his lifetime.
But it would come. Eventually. One generation at a time. One baby thinking vampire great-uncles were normal. One family proving love was stronger than hate.
Our son would be part of that. Part of building tomorrow.
And that–that was worth every fear, every threat, every sleepless night worrying about Elena’s followers.
Together. Always together. Grace, me, and our son.
Building peace. One impossible day at a time.
Until someday–maybe not soon, maybe not in our lifetime-integration was just normal. Vampire great-uncles were unremarkable. And children like our son grew up without hate or judgment.
That was the future I was fighting for.
Chapter 26
That was the world I wanted for him.
And somehow -impossibly believed we’d build it.
Together. Always together. All of us.
For him. For every child born into integrated families. For the future Elena couldn’t destroy.
Peace would come.
Eventually.
We just had to keep fighting for it.
**THE END**
