Before Silas Sheridan showed up, he and Yvaine had bickered and fought for years, yet they had never actually broken up.
He used to believe it was because she loved him too much to leave.
But looking at it now, was that really the truth?
Could it be that she had only stuck around because she couldn't find anyone richer, more powerful, or better than him at the time?
He hated thinking about Yvaine that way.
He wanted to believe the girl he knew wasn't that superficial.
And yet... he couldn't be sure.
After all, Silas's immense family background and jaw-dropping wealth were enough to tempt anyone.
Yvaine didn't argue. She just looked at Zachary in quiet resignation.
After spending so many years with him, she had assumed he understood her character at least a little.
If he didn't, then what had these past years even been about?
What was the point of all the time and emotion she had poured into him?
But seeing the look on Zachary's face now... it seemed she had been entirely wrong.
Under her unwavering gaze, Zachary lost a bit of his momentum. He pressed his lips together and fell silent.
"Zachary," Albina scolded, her brows furrowing sharply. "Watch your tone. We all know exactly what kind of person Yvaine is."
Even if business families prioritized profit, neither Yvaine nor the Sterlings were the type to cold-bloodedly abandon their loved ones just to make a buck.
"Then why did she marry someone else?" Zachary demanded angrily.
Though he was answering his mother, his fiery gaze remained entirely fixated on Yvaine.
Yvaine just kept looking at him.
