Chapter 154 She Took A Digital Photo
The silence in the massive cafeteria felt heavy and thick. It pressed against my eardrums. The fluorescent overhead lights cast a harsh, unforgiving glare on the polished linoleum floor.
Chloe stood ten feet away. She wore her crimson and gold varsity jacket over her uniform. Her blonde ponytail sat high on her head. She held the folded square of college-ruled paper between her manicured fingers. The blue ink of our signatures bled through the thin page,
visible even from a distance.
The rest of the cheerleading squad lingered near the heavy double doors. They shifted their weight, confused by the sudden tension.
“Go to the locker room,” Chloe ordered her teammates. She did not take her blue eyes off me. “I need a minute to catch up with an old
friend.”
The girls exchanged uncertain glances, but they did not argue. They picked up their heavy duffel bags. They pushed back through the doors. The metal hinges groaned, and the doors clicked shut.
We were alone.
Ryder did not wait for an invitation. He moved. He closed the distance with long, punishing strides. His broad shoulders blocked my view of the cafeteria. He brought his massive frame right up to the edge of Chloe’s personal space. The dark, untamed storm radiated from his posture. He weaponized his reputation. He wanted to terrify her into submission.
“Give me the paper, Chloe,” Ryder demanded. His voice dropped to a rough, scraping gravel. The sound echoed off the cinderblock walls, carrying a lethal warning.
Chloe did not flinch. She did not retreat from the Crestview monster. She tipped her chin up and met his hostile glare.
“Or what, Steinmann?” she challenged. “You will punch a hole in the vending machine? You will throw a cafeteria chair? Your intimidation tactics work on the boys in the B-wing. They do not work on me. I hold the winning hand.”
She reached into the pocket of her varsity jacket. She pulled out her sleek smartphone. She tapped the screen and held the device up.
A high-resolution photograph of the contract filled the display.
“I found the planner on Monday afternoon, Chloe explained. Her tone sounded conversational, masking the deep venom beneath her words. “I read the rules. I read the part where you two agreed to fake a relationship to trick Principal Miller. I read the part about your attendance record. The entire arrangement is a massive fraud. I knew it the second you walked into the gym last night. The midnight silk dress was a nice touch, but it does not change the truth.”
Ryder locked his jaw. The muscle ticked beneath his pale skin. He realized the physical paper no longer mattered. The digital footprint existed. He could not punch a photograph out of existence.
‘Delete the photos, he growled.

:
Chloe let out a sharp, mocking laugh. “I synced the files to a secure cloud server three days ago. If you touch me, if you threaten me, I
press a single button. The contract goes to the principal, the school board, and every student in the senior class.”
She looked past his broad chest. She sought me out.
“Step out of his shadow, Raisa, Chloe called. “This conversation is between us.”
My legs felt like heavy lead. My hands shook. I forced myself to move. I stepped around Ryder. I stood shoulder to shoulder with the boy I loved. I faced the girl who used to share my lunch table in the seventh grade.
We used to trade sandwiches. We used to study for history exams on my faded living room rug. We shared secrets. We shared dreams. Then high school started. Chloe realized a scholarship student from the East Side lacked the wealth and status required for the top of the social pyramid. She discarded our friendship like a piece of cheap clothing. She joined the affluent elite. She became the primary source of the cruel whispers that chased me down the hallways.
“Why are you doing this?” I asked. My voice sounded hollow in the vast room. “You ignore me for four years. Why do you care about a fake
contract?”
“I care about fairness, Chloe replied. She lowered her phone. She kept the college-ruled paper pinched in her fingers. “You walked into the formal last night wearing a custom silk gown. You held the arm of the wealthiest boy in the state. The entire school bowed to you. You manipulated the system to steal a crown that does not belong to you.”
