My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 1224

Ding.

A message popped up on her phone.

Amelia Lane sat up, using the back of her hand to slide her phone closer across the table. The screen lit up with a message from Hanley, her blind date from earlier. Nothing important. She wasn’t in the mood to reply, so she tossed the phone aside and collapsed back onto her bed.

Ding. Ding.

More messages came in. Amelia figured they were from Hanley too and ignored them.

A couple of minutes passed, then her phone started ringing. She groaned, annoyed, and sat up to check the caller ID. Her eyes went wide when she saw the name on the screen.

Andrew Lane.

Her heart thudded. Was he calling to chew her out? Her chest tightened, breath caught, as she stared at his name pulsing on the screen. What would Andrew do to her for roping Dennis into that fake suicide stunt? She was really in trouble now.

Amelia twisted her hands together, her mind racing. She decided not to answer. If Andrew asked later, she’d say she was asleep and missed the call.

Having made up her mind, she retreated back into bed, watching her vibrating phone like it might bite her. In the quiet, the ringtone sounded extra shrill, echoing through the room and making her even more anxious. She wanted to hang up on him so badly.

After almost a minute, the phone finally went silent. The call had ended on its own.

Amelia let out a shaky breath, only to tense up again when the phone started ringing a second time.

Her heart jumped. She crept over and peeked at the screen. Of course, it was Andrew again.

She shot backward, staring at the phone in alarm. This was bad. He was definitely calling to confront her. There was no way she was answering. No way.

She yanked the blanket over her head and awkwardly hugged a pillow to her ears, trying to muffle the sound. It didn’t help much; she could still hear the phone ringing, over and over.

The ringing would stop, then start up again. Stop, then start again.

Andrew called three times in total. Amelia ignored all of them. By the end of the third call, her heart was pounding so hard she thought it might burst out of her chest.

She wasn’t sleepy at all now. She just lay there, eyes wide, waiting for whatever came next. The phone finally went quiet for a long time. Maybe Andrew had given up.

Amelia exhaled slowly, crawling out from under the pillow. She slid over to her phone, unlocked it with her face, and tapped open her messages.

Two from Andrew.

Andrew: I need to talk to you. I’m sending someone to pick you up. Be ready.

Andrew: Answer your phone.

Two short messages, but they made her heart lurch. What else could this be about except Dennis? Andrew was coming for her. This was it. She was doomed.

She glanced at the messages, then quickly looked away. If she pretended she hadn’t seen them, maybe they’d just disappear.
