My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 941

Emily Blair said, “I’m here to ask Ms. Reid a few questions. Years ago, there was a child at Sunshine House—that orphanage that closed down over a decade ago. Her birth father is looking for her now. I wanted to see if Ms. Reid might know where she is.”

The old man folded his hands behind his back. “Sunshine House?”

Emily repeated to him what she’d told Ms. Morris earlier.

He stepped aside from the doorway. “Come in, then. Let’s talk inside.”

“Thank you.”

Emily handed over her fruit basket. “Just a small token of appreciation—I hope you’ll accept it.”

The old man shut the door firmly, his tone brooking no argument. “No need for that. You can take it with you when you leave.”

Emily hesitated, surprised, then nodded. “Alright. I’ll bring it back with me later.”

She followed him into the living room.

“Have a seat, wherever you like. My wife’s in the bedroom—I’ll go call her.”

Emily sat down and listened as the old man called out to his wife, his voice raised louder each time. “Honey, someone’s here to ask about the old orphanage. Come out here.”

He repeated himself three times before another voice finally answered from the bedroom.

“Who is it?” The woman’s voice was faint.

“You’ll see when you come out,” he replied, repeating himself again.

By the time Lauren Reid finally emerged, nearly ten minutes had passed.

Though Ms. Reid was a bit hard of hearing, she was still in good health—and actually moved faster than her husband.

Emily stood up. “Ms. Reid, hello.”

Lauren’s voice boomed. “What was that?”

Emily faltered for a moment. “Uh—”

“It’s been so many years… I’m not sure where those three children ended up. I’ll need to look for the records.”

Emily had expected this answer. “That’s alright. I understand.”

Lauren stood, clutching the notebook, glancing around the room. “Let me think where I might’ve put them…”

She nudged her husband with her elbow. “Help me out, will you? Where did I store those records?”

He shook his head, admitting he couldn’t remember anymore.

Another hurdle in an already complicated search.

But in the end, they caught a break—the old man managed to find the records under their bed, in a box tucked away for years. They contained the information about the children from Sunshine House.

Emily quickly sorted through the documents, zeroing in on the registration cards for the three children and snapping a photo of them for her records.

Lauren watched her, then said quietly, “Those kids have had a hard life. If you do find her, promise you’ll treat her well. Make up for all the years she spent without her parents by her side. Don’t think you can just bring her back to make her work for you. If that’s what you’re planning, I’d rather you never find her at all.”
