Later, Roy came by with food. She barely eats, after one or two small bites, she set it down again. The food tasted like nothing in her mouth. Her stomach twisted, not from nausea, but from the storm of emotions eating her from inside. She didn’t say a single word to anyone.
David watched her quietly from the side. The silence was killing him. He wanted to say something, anything but every time he looked at her face, he couldn’t find the words.
Later in the evening, he finally said, “I’ll be outside. If you need anything… just call me, okay?”
She didn’t answer. Didn’t even look at him. He waited, hoping she might at least glance his way, but she stayed still, eyes fixed on nothing. So, with a heavy sigh, David turned and walked out.
The door closed behind him with a soft click.
Only then did Lily turn her head toward the door. For a moment, she just stared at it, and then she pressed her lips tightly together, trying to stop the sob that was threatening to escape. Her chest ached. She felt like screaming, but no sound came out.
Ever since the doctor said she was pregnant, her heart hadn’t rested for a single moment. Her thoughts were a mess, tangled and painful. What am I supposed to do now? she kept asking herself.
Until now, she had managed to survive barely but now everything felt impossible. David had never truly let her go, even when she begged for freedom. Now that she carried his child, he would never let her leave. Divorce would be out of the question.
The thought made her chest tighten. She can’t live with him again… she can’t go back to that suffocating life. Not even for this child.
Her hands were trembling as she slowly got out of bed. The IV line tugged at her arm a little, but she ignored it and walked toward the window.
Outside, the evening sun was soft and golden. Down in the hospital courtyard, she saw a woman in a hospital gown sitting in a wheelchair. A man, her husband, maybe was feeding her something from a lunch box. Nearby, two small girls were playing, running around and laughing. Every now and then, they’d run back to their parents, and their father would feed them too. The couple looked at their daughters with pure joy on their faces.
Watching them, Lily felt her throat tighten. Her heart ached painfully. That scene, so simple, so peaceful was something she knew she could never have.
Her hand rested on her stomach. The thought of the child growing inside her filled her with fear instead of warmth.
She knew she couldn’t give her child that kind of life. Not in a house filled with silence, anger, and regret. No matter how much she compromised, nothing good could come out of being tied to David again.
And as someone who had grown up without a mother, she knew better than anyone how painful it was for a child to grow up missing love. Her eyes filled with tears again, and she whispered softly to herself,
“I can’t let my child live like that… I can’t.”
Lily was still staring out the window when she heard heels.
The sound grew louder, steady and sharp on the hospital floor. For a moment she hoped it was someone else, a nurse, maybe. But when she turned slowly, her heart sank.
Marina stood in the doorway, all dressed up and furious. Behind her came Lina, her agent, looking nervous and small. Lily’s stomach turned cold. She didn’t want them here.
