Riyana turned on the hair dryer, the soft hum filling the room. She stood behind him, carefully running her fingers through his damp hair, separating the strands so the warm air could reach properly. Her touch was gentle, almost hesitant.
Jabco closed his eyes.
He did not say anything, but the way his shoulders slowly relaxed said enough. He liked this. He liked the quiet care in her actions, the closeness, the feeling of being looked after instead of always being the one in control.
Riyana’s face remained calm, but inside, her emotions were tangled. She did not even know why she had done this. Maybe it was curiosity. Maybe it was guilt. Maybe it was fear of losing something she was not ready to admit she valued.
Or maybe it was simply the fact that, despite everything, she still cared.
Minutes passed slowly. When his hair was fully dry, she turned off the dryer and placed it back on the table.
“That’s enough,” she said softly.
Jabco opened his eyes and turned his head slightly to look at her. Their eyes met for a brief moment. Riyana looked away first.
She walked back to the bed and lay down again, turning her back to him, pulling the blanket over her shoulder like a shield.
Jabco let out a quiet breath.
He stood up and crossed the room, slipping into the space beside her on the bed. He moved closer, careful not to startle her.
“Thank you for helping me,” he whispered, his arm resting lightly around her waist.
Riyana stayed still. She did not respond. Not because she was angry, but because she did not know what to say. She had done something impulsive, something honest, and now she felt exposed because of it.
Jabco leaned closer, his face near her ear.
His lips brushed against her ear suddenly.
The warmth of his breath sent an unexpected shiver through her body. Not because she wanted it to. But because her body reacted before her mind could stop it.
She stiffened immediately and turned her head slightly, irritation rising fast.
“What are you doing?” she snapped quietly. “Let me sleep.”
Her hand came up quickly, pushing his hand away from her. The movement was sharp, full of warning.
Jabco didn’t like that.
Not her tone.
Not her pushing him away.
And most of all, not the fact that she wouldn’t look at him.
he did not like the distance. He never did.
He shifted closer instead of moving back. His arm wrapped around her again, pulling her gently but firmly toward him. Before she could react properly, he leaned in and bit lightly at her neck, more out of frustration than intention.
“Ouch!”
Riyana cried out, both startled and irritated. She immediately pushed herself up and turned around to face him, sitting upright on the bed.
Her eyes were blazing.
“You want me to throw you out of this room? You want to sleep on the sofa?”
Her voice was sharp, filled with real anger now.
Jabco froze for a moment.
Then Jabco lifted his hand slightly, not in anger, but instinctively.
Riyana reacted instantly, trying to push his hand away again on instinct.
But this time, he didn’t grab her. He didn’t force her. Instead, his fingers reached her face gently. His thumb brushed softly along her jaw, careful, controlled, almost hesitant.
