My Husband’s Second Personality Loved His Sister-in-Law novel Chapter 5

Chapter 5

Nathaniel returned to the Reed Estate, but unease lingered in his chest.

He expected Evelyn to bombard his iMessage with apologies, to beg him to reconsider the divorce, to realize it had all been a temporary lapse.

But his phone was silent-eerily silent.

Even the long-muted notifications, disabled years ago due to constant messages, remained dormant.

He drummed his fingers on the desk, debating whether to reach out, when Sophia appeared in the doorway. Her eyes were still puffy from crying.

“Has Evelyn messaged you yet?” she asked softly.

“Don’t let me get in the way of your marriage. I’d feel guilty if I did.”

Nathaniel’s hand hovered over his phone and then withdrew.

Memories of the last four years flashed through his mind-Evelyn forgiving everything, never questioning his illness, sacrificing endlessly.

Even this divorce request, he reminded himself, was only because she had spent too long away from home.

And it all had context: Sophia was pregnant.

As a woman, Evelyn understood the hardship of pregnancy and the care needed in the early months. Once

she got through this period and came to terms with things, a few thoughtful gifts would win her over.

Evelyn would once again become his most devoted wife.

At the thought, Nathaniel let out a quiet, satisfied chuckle. “It’s nothing,” he murmured to himself.

“She’s just throwing a tantrum. Once she thinks it through, she’ll come back.”

“I don’t need to worry; I know her too well.”

He glanced at his black-screened phone, dispelling the last trace of doubt.

Sophia nodded but then suddenly gagged.

“Are you okay?” Nathaniel asked, rising immediately.

Margaret arrived soon after, preparing early-pregnancy safe supplements for Sophia.

Nathaniel glanced at the cabinet.

It was stacked with all the remedies Evelyn had collected over the years.

Suddenly, her slight, determined figure flashed through his mind, running between city streets and remote

towns.

Once, in her search for a local herbalist, she had nearly fallen into a cave.

She had returned home, bleeding and torn, but glowing with excitement, proudly showing him the prescriptions she’d obtained.

“Once you’re better, you’ll love me like before, right?” Evelyn’s voice echoed in his mind.

A sudden wave of guilt washed over him. He handed Sophia the supplements.

Andrew was gone, and he saw clearly how lonely she must have been. He was only fulfilling his brother’s duty.

He repeated this reassurance to himself: once Evelyn received a few more gifts, she’d be happy again.

Nathaniel picked up his phone and messaged Daniel.

[Order the latest trending gowns and jewelry-one of each.]

After a pause, he added, [Also, get the newest luxury bags-one of each-and have them delivered to my office.]

He smirked, imagining Evelyn’s excitement when she saw them.

Once Sophia had the baby, he would go back to Evelyn-and they’d live their lives together, just the two of

them. The next day at work, everything was eerily quiet wherever Nathaniel walked.

He frowned, noticing Daniel’s nervous glance.

“Mr. Reed, the courier delivered a package for you today,” Daniel said, avoiding eye contact.

“Was this from the things I ordered yesterday?” Nathaniel asked instinctively.

“Better check yourself,” Daniel replied, then disappeared.

Nathaniel’s gaze fell on a document on the desk.

Flipping it open, his face went pale.

It was the divorce papers-legally binding, signed by both him and Evelyn.
