Chapter 6
Nathaniel’s heart skipped a beat.
Divorce?
Evelyn?
How could she possibly… divorce him?
A cold chill ran through his limbs. He checked again and again, then grabbed his phone and called her.
The moment the call connected, it went straight to voicemail. She’d blocked him?
Panic, unlike anything he had ever felt, surged through Nathaniel from head to toe.
Every single message he sent on iMessage came back with “Not Delivered.” He sat frozen for three seconds,
then jumped up and drove to Evelyn’s office.
Along the way, he watched the trees lining the street blur past, and his mind involuntarily replayed their last
encounter.
From his perspective, nothing had gone wrong. The only mistake had been wearing the wedding ring.
At the company gala, seeing Daniel hand him the divorce papers, Nathaniel panicked. Instinctively, he wanted
to switch to his first personality to salvage their fragile marriage.
He knew this trick worked-every time he pretended to be his other persona, Evelyn’s disappointment and
hurt would soften.
But just putting the ring on, pretending to switch back, could erase all the harsh words and mistakes. She
loved him, trusted him.
So he had become practiced at this routine.
Yet Nathaniel hadn’t expected to walk in and see Evelyn slap Sophia.
His hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly it creaked.
Regardless, Evelyn was in the wrong first.
Now, she was throwing a tantrum-no doubt spoiled by him.
He knew it was all just a ploy to win back his love.
After all, Evelyn had been with him since college. Eight years had passed.
Their bond went beyond romance-It was deeply intertwined with their lives. At Evelyn’s office, Nathaniel stopped his car.
He went to a nearby florist and picked a large bouquet of the freshest, most vibrant roses, and finally felt

ready to enter the building with them.
“Hello, I’m looking for Evelyn Bennett,” he said, scanning the office. No familiar figure appeared.
“Evelyn?”
Lauren at the front desk looked confused.
“Miss Bennett resigned some time ago,” she said. “Didn’t you know?”
The roses slipped from his hands, scattering across the floor.
“Resigned?” he echoed. “But… how could she…”
“Do you know where she is now?”
With Lauren helplessly shaking her head, Nathaniel left the building, knuckles cracking from his grip.
What exactly was Evelyn trying to do?
His phone buzzed violently.
Nathaniel let out a small smile. Of course-Evelyn couldn’t stay patient.
Unlocking it, Nathaniel saw every trending topic dominated by photos of him and Sophia in intimate proximity.
[Reed Group Ethics Scandal]
The story had shot straight to the trending list, dominating every headline slot. At that moment, Daniel’s panicked voice came through the line.
“Mr. Reed! It’s bad! All of our partners have decided to pull out!”
“And, and they’re demanding compensation, citing damage to their company image….”
He hesitated, then added, “There’s also a legal letter from Evelyn… addressed to Miss Reed, demanding over ten million dollars in compensation!”
