Chapter 3 Perfect Acting Used to Destroy Me
Tears spilled out before I could stop them, soaking the hair at my temples.
Since my mother passed away, I had never cried with such utter despair.

Finn panicked the second he saw me crying. He reached for my face, stammering apologies, “Ella, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean it like that. I know you’re scared of Grace. Look, I’ll send her abroad for treatment tomorrow. She won’t come back until she is better. I promise.”
Before I could answer, Grace lost it completely. She lunged at me and screamed, “Finn, do you think I’m a burden and try to drive me away? Fine! Let me die!”
She was sobbing and hysterical and grabbed my IV bag and smashed it on the floor.
Then Grace picked up a piece of glass and pressed it to her wrist, her eyes all wet and wounded.
She shouted, “I know Ella hates me. I’ll die right now to pay for her baby with my own life!”
At that moment, a sharp pain shot through the back of my hand, and I let out a cry of agony.
Grace’s thrashing had ripped the needle right through my vein. Blood was pooling under the tape.
But Finn didn’t even glance my way. He was too busy soothing her, his eyes frantic.
He said, “Grace, that’s not what I meant. I just want you to get better.”
Grace crumpled, weeping like she’d been stabbed through the heart, and said, “You don’t have to explain, Finn. I know I’m just a burden to everyone.”
As she spoke, she slashed her wrist with a shard.
“Grace!” Finn tried to stop her.
He rushed her, but it was too late. There was a cut left on Grace’s wrist.
Finn pulled her into his arms with a sad face and said, “Grace, I’m sorry. This is my fault. I swear I will never leave you. Never”
Then he whipped around and yelled down the hall, “Someone’s bleeding in here! Get a doctor! Now!”
I watched them like I was watching an old-fashioned tear-jerking movie. It was absurd.
So, this was what Finn looked like when he actually cared about someone. He completely lost his cool.
The nurse who came in took one look at Grace’s wrist and rolled her eyes impatiently.
She complained, “Seriously? If I’d come any later, it would’ve healed on its own.”
Grace said, “Finn, it hurts.”
Grace’s voice was tiny and pathetic. Therefore, Finn snapped at the nurse, “She’s in pain! Heal her! Or I’ll shut this whole hospital
down!”
