**Vows Became Blame by Mark Twain 2**
**Chapter 2**
“Is everything alright?” Tessa inquired, her curiosity piqued as soon as the call concluded. She leaned in, her eyes sparkling with concern.
“The individual slated to deliver the speech in three days has been replaced by you,” Bella replied, her face remaining impassive, as if she were discussing the weather rather than a life-altering event.
“Me? But I didn’t perform nearly as well as you did! I’m not even close to being as remarkable as you are. Why on earth would they choose me out of the blue? I can’t handle this! I need to hurry home and prepare!”
Bella watched as Tessa’s eyes widened with a mix of excitement and panic, and before anyone could react, she dashed out the door, her footsteps echoing with urgency.
Sebastian and Ronald exchanged glances but made no move to stop her. Their gazes lingered on her retreating figure, a poignant mix of admiration and longing evident in their expressions, as if they yearned to chase after her at that very moment.
Bella, catching the look in their eyes, remarked coolly, “If you really want to, you should go after her.”
“What are you talking about? You’re right here! Why would we leave to follow her?” Sebastian snapped back, jolted from his reverie.
He turned to Bella, a small, reassuring smile breaking through his earlier confusion. After a brief pause, he added in a gentle, comforting tone, “It’s just a speech slot. Don’t let it weigh you down.”
“Absolutely! Bella is incredible. The school must be blind to have replaced you,” Ronald chimed in, his voice full of earnestness.
A slight tug at the corner of Bella’s mouth hinted at a smile, yet she remained silent, grappling with the irony of it all.
In her previous life, they had consoled her in precisely the same manner, even while orchestrating her replacement behind her back.
Bella opened her mouth, ready to voice her thoughts, but before she could utter a single word, Sebastian and Ronald interrupted her once more. “Bella, we’re taking you somewhere special.”
With an air of mystery, they whisked her away, and when they finally came to a halt, Bella found herself standing in front of a vibrant field adorned with flowers and a kaleidoscope of colorful balloons. It dawned on her that they had brought her here to confess their feelings.
Sebastian, with a flourish, produced a bouquet of pristine white roses—where he had procured them was a mystery—and gazed at her with unmistakable affection. “Bella, you know how I’ve felt about you all this time. Now, I’m here to seek an answer.”
Not wanting to be outdone, Ronald quickly revealed a bouquet of deep red roses from behind his back, his voice thick with emotion. “Bella, I liked you first. I’ve been planning this confession for three months.”
“You have to choose me. If you agree to be with me, I would go through anything for you.”
As she observed the two of them kneeling before her, Bella felt a wave of disbelief wash over her. Had she not uncovered the truth, the sincerity etched on their faces might have swayed her into believing they truly loved her.
They had grown up together, and she had never anticipated that the two people she thought she understood so well could be such adept performers.
