Chapter 213: The Cash Out

[Jake’s POV]

The poker game dissolved shortly after the massive all-in hand.

Volkov stood first, stretching his shoulders like he’d been sitting too long. "I’m done bleeding tonight," he said with a rough laugh. He cashed out what was left of his stack and gave me a nod on his way to the private elevator. Leung followed a minute later, quiet, his face unreadable. He didn’t look at the pot I’d dragged in.

Thorne lingered. He finished his drink, set the crystal down precisely on a coaster, and looked at me. "That was instructive, Mr. Croft. I don’t get to see someone play Evelyn like that very often."

He gave a polite, empty smile. "Until next time."

Then it was just Evelyn and me.

The attendants moved like ghosts. They cleared the table, boxed the remaining chips, wiped down the felt. No one spoke. In under two minutes the room looked like no one had ever played here.

I walked to the panoramic window. The Cotai Strip stretched out below, endless and bright. Sixty floors down, cars looked like slow-moving ants. Up here the air was cold and still.

I had a crystal tumbler of scotch in my hand. I hadn’t asked for it. It had just appeared.

"You didn’t come here to play poker, Mr. Croft."

I turned.

Evelyn was standing by the custom bar, pouring herself a measure of clear liquid. Vodka, from the bottle. No ice. She’d dropped the formal posture. Her shoulders were down a fraction. She looked tired. The weight of the Grand Azure sitting on her for the first time all night.

"I came to win," I replied simply.

"You won twenty-two million dollars," she said, walking slowly toward me. Her heels made no sound on the rug. She stopped a few feet away, her ice-blue eyes searching my face. "But you didn’t celebrate. You didn’t even smile. You played that final hand like an executioner."

"I play the player, Evelyn," I said, dropping the formal title. "You have a tell. When you’re bluffing under extreme pressure, you breathe through your mouth. It’s a microscopic shift, but it’s there."

She froze.

For half a second her eyes widened. Genuine shock. This was a woman who built her reputation on being unreadable. To have it named out loud, and correctly, was a violation.

"Who are you?" she whispered. The question came out low, with both fear and curiosity in it.

"I’m a man who needs a favor," I said, setting my glass down on a nearby side table. "And I have twenty-two million dollars in clean, untraceable casino chips to pay for it."

Evelyn crossed her arms. The defensive wall came back up instantly. "I don’t do favors. I run a business. If you want to cash out, my floor manager will arrange the wire transfer to your Singapore accounts."

"I don’t want a wire transfer," I said, stepping closer to her. "I want the cash. And I want it accompanied by a ledger entry from the Grand Azure, backdated by six months, showing a consistent, legitimate revenue stream for a specific client."

Her eyes narrowed. "You want me to falsify my internal audits. You want me to launder money for you."

"You launder money for the Four Dragons every day," I pointed out. My voice stayed even. "I’m just asking for a single, isolated transaction."
