Chapter 214: The Morning Audit

[Jake’s POV]

The transition from the sterile, air-conditioned luxury of the Grand Azure to the humid, diesel-scented reality of the Outer Harbour was jarring.

One minute I was sixty floors up, glass and steel and silence.

The next I was standing in an alley that smelled like seawater, cigarettes, and old garbage.

I stepped out of the unmarked armored transport van and into the narrow space behind the Golden Koi mahjong parlor. The morning sun was just starting to cut through the smog, turning everything a dull, dirty gold.

Two of Evelyn Jin’s private security contractors were already there. They moved without speaking. Professional. They unloaded four heavy, reinforced Pelican cases onto the wet pavement. The cases thudded. Money has weight.

They nodded to me once, got back in the van, and drove away. No words. No receipts.

I stood there for a second, looking at the cases. Nineteen point eight million dollars. Clean. Untraceable. Backed by the Grand Azure.

The back door of the parlor hissed open. Ethan stepped out. He had a suppressed submachine gun slung across his chest and dark circles under his eyes. He looked at the Pelican cases, then up at me.

"Tell me that’s not what I think it is," he muttered.

"Grab a handle," I said, picking up the first case. "We need to get these into the vault before the morning shift arrives."

We hauled them down the narrow concrete hallway. The floor was still damp from being mopped. The walls were bare brick. The contrast between this and the penthouse last night was almost funny.

The counting room was already lit. Li was there, sitting at the steel table, a stack of handwritten collection logs in front of her. She looked exhausted. Her hair was pulled back, no makeup, sleeves rolled up. She’d been up all night.

She looked up when we dropped the cases on the table.

"Open them," I told Ethan.

He popped the latches. One, two, three, four.

The lids came back and the room filled with cash. Neat bands. High denominations. Stacks and stacks of it. It didn’t look real under the fluorescent lights.

Li stood up slowly. She didn’t touch it at first. Her eyes just moved over the stacks. Then she reached out and brushed her fingers over the top band, like she needed to confirm it wasn’t an illusion.

"The Grand Azure," I said, pulling a sleek, black USB drive from my pocket and tossing it onto the table beside the cash. "The drive contains six months of backdated, encrypted ledgers. It shows a consistent, high-yield revenue stream from a series of VIP baccarat tournaments hosted by the Golden Koi and facilitated by Evelyn Jin’s network. The money is clean, Li. It’s fully taxed and accounted for."

Li picked up the USB drive. Her hand was trembling slightly. She looked at me, and I could see it hit her. All of it.

I hadn’t just held the Outer Harbour.

I’d just made it legitimate.

"You played Evelyn Jin," Li whispered. There was awe in her voice, and something else. Disbelief. "No one plays the Casino Queen."
