Chapter 216: The Four Dragons

[Jake’s POV]

The Imperial Mountain was silent in a way Macau never was.

We walked along a path of smooth river stones. Each step made a soft _clack_. On both sides: perfectly manicured zen gardens. Raked white sand. Twisted pines that looked a hundred years old. The air was cool and damp. It smelled like wet stone, sandalwood incense, and something sweet I couldn’t name.

The mist hung low between the pines. Lantern light barely touched the path. Every sound felt muffled, absorbed by wood and stone and centuries of silence.

We crossed an arched wooden bridge. Below us, a koi pond. Black water. The fish moved like shadows under the surface, slow and deliberate. Lanterns hung from the eaves, casting a low orange light that didn’t reach far.

Every fifty feet, another pair of Imperial Guards.

Charcoal tactical suits. Hands resting near concealed weapons. They didn’t look at us. They didn’t need to. Their armor made no sound. The only movement was breath in the cold air. Watchful. Patient. Like statues that could kill.

The wealth here wasn’t loud. No neon. No gold plating. This was older. Generational. The stone, the wood, the lacquer — everything was worn in, not bought yesterday.

The path curved and the pavilion came into view.

It was built from dark mahogany and red lacquered wood. Massive. Open-air. It sat on the edge of the cliff like it had grown there. Beyond the railing, the entire city of Macau glittered below. A sea of light. From up here it looked calm. It wasn’t. Below, sirens and traffic. Up here, nothing but wind through bamboo. The contrast was violent. The mountain felt removed from time, from the chaos it ruled.

Inside the pavilion, a low table carved from a single piece of wood. Around it, three men sat on plush silk cushions.

I stopped two paces behind Li as she stepped onto the polished floor. I clasped my hands behind my back. Eyes down. Silent shadow.

But I cataloged everything.

To Li’s left: Han. Boss of the Jade Tigers.

Old. Face deeply lined. Gray hair tied back. Wearing a traditional silk tunic the color of jade. He controlled extortion and underground fighting in the northern districts. He smelled faintly of tea and medicine.

Across from him: Lin. Head of the Iron Fists.

Built like a tank. Massive shoulders. Arms covered in faded triad tattoos that disappeared under his sleeves. He controlled smuggling and weapons. The table creaked slightly under his weight. He had a scar that ran from his jaw to his collar.

The scar was old. The tattoos were older. His knuckles were scarred too. A man who settled things with his hands before his words.

To Li’s right: Zhao. Leader of the Crimson Triad.

Youngest. Sharp, modern suit. No tattoos visible. His eyes moved constantly. To the door. To the guards. To Li. He handled human trafficking and counterfeit. He looked nervous.

His cufflinks caught the lantern light. He kept adjusting them. A tell. He was afraid of being the weakest man in the room.

The hostility in the air was physical. It pressed down.
