[Jake’s POV]
The armored Mercedes Maybach idled in the alley behind the Golden Koi.
The rain had stopped, but the air hadn’t. It was thick, humid, clinging to the back of my neck and the inside of my collar. Every breath felt damp. The alley smelled like wet concrete, diesel, and old garbage from the bins pushed against the brick wall. Somewhere above, water dripped from a fire escape and hit the hood of the car.
_Tink. Tink. Tink._
I stood by the open rear door, adjusting the cuffs of my charcoal suit. The fabric was cool and heavy. I had swapped the shoulder rig for an inside-the-waistband carry. The jacket laid flat. No lines. The suppressed USP pressed against the small of my back. Subsonic hollow points. I could feel the ceramic blade strapped to my left ankle through the sock. Cold. Light. Invisible to a metal detector.
The rear door of the parlor banged open.
Ethan came out.
He looked different. Tactical vest over a black hoodie. Compact assault rifle on a single-point sling. His eyes were bloodshot but clear. He smelled like gun oil and the cheap coffee he’d been drinking since midnight.
"Perimeter is locked tight," Ethan said, voice low. He kept glancing down the alley without moving his head. "I’ve got men on the rooftops across the street. Rotating patrol on the ground floor. Nobody gets within fifty yards of this building without us knowing."
"Keep them alert," I said. "The summit is the distraction. If the other bosses want to make a move on the territory, they’ll do it while Li is isolated on the mountain."
"I’ve got it covered, Noah," Ethan said. He gave me a short nod. "Just watch your back up there. We’re blind once you pass the checkpoint."
The steel door opened again.
Li stepped out.
She wore a high-collared black suit. Gold embroidery ran along the lapels. Subtle. The Golden Koi colors. Her hair was pulled back into a severe updo. No loose strands. No jewelry except a single jade pin. The vulnerability I’d seen in her earlier was gone. Locked away.
This was the Matriarch.
She didn’t speak to Ethan. She gave him one curt nod, then slid into the back of the Maybach. The leather seat made a soft sound.
I closed her door. The sound was heavy. I walked around the car and got in on the other side. The driver, a veteran who survived the purges, didn’t look at us. He put the car in gear and pulled out of the alley.
The city moved past the tinted windows.
Neon smeared across the glass. Red. Gold. White. The soundproof partition was up. Inside the car it was quiet except for the low hum of the engine and the tires on wet asphalt. The air vents pushed out cold air that smelled faintly like leather cleaner.
I tapped my earpiece. "Overwatch, we are mobile."
"Tracking your GPS," Claire’s voice came back instantly. Clean. No delay. "Traffic is light. You should reach the base of the Coloane hills in twenty minutes. Nia is running continuous sweeps on the local police bands. Triad frequencies are dead quiet. It’s too quiet, Noah."
"They’re waiting for the verdict from the summit," I said. Outside, a night market was packing up. Steam still rose from a wok as a vendor hosed down the cart. "If the Four Dragons strip Li of her title tonight, the streets will explode by morning."
"We’ll be ready," Nia chimed in. "I’ve pre-programmed rolling blackouts for the Outer Harbour grid. If things go south, I can plunge the entire district into darkness to cover your extraction."
"Understood. Going dark in fifteen."
