Chapter 230
Ace was utterly stunned.
In such extraordinary times–inside his own home, no less–three former high school classmates had somehow reunited. It was unbelievable.
What made it even more absurd was that Ray had been their victim back in school. Or rather, Shane had been the one calling the shots; Ace had merely been the lackey.
Back then, whoever Shane told him to bite, he bit. Orders were orders.
And now, both the boss and the wronged victim had shown up at his door together. How could Ace not be shocked?
‘Am I really living in an apocalyptic disaster? Why does it feel like bumping into people from the past is so damn easy?‘ Ace couldn’t help thinking.
He frowned. “Ray, what are you getting at?”
Ace was tall–slightly taller than Ray–and far more solidly built. In terms of raw strength, he completely outclassed him. If this escalated into a fight, Ace was sure he could take on two Rays by himself.
To be a useful lackey, Ace had worked out religiously for years. Obedient and effective—that was his value.
And the flattery hadn’t been wasted. Shane had even introduced him to a beautiful woman from the company, now his wife. Ace had once felt unworthy of her, but not only had they married–they’d even had a son.
Naturally, his loyalty to Shane had only deepened.
Ray smiled faintly. “That car outside is mine. Who I take with me is my choice. But that’s not why I’m here.” His gaze shifted. ” Ace, your son doesn’t look anything like you.”
After being burned in a past life, Ray was especially sensitive to things like this. And he wasn’t talking nonsense. The resemblance was nonexistent.
The moment the words left his mouth, Shane and Ace’s wife both changed expression–very subtly, almost imperceptibly. But
Ray caught it.
What had been a fifty–percent suspicion, instantly became certainty. Two people reacting at the same time–there was no
clearer proof.
“Ray! What the hell are you implying?” Ace exploded, veins bulging at his temples. He was on the verge of attacking.
What a short fuse.
Ray remained perfectly relaxed. “I’m just giving you a friendly reminder. Don’t raise someone else’s kid. By the way–do you know your son’s blood type?”
“That’s enough!” Ace’s wife screamed. “Honey, why are you letting him spout this nonsense? Throw him out–now!”
Shane seized the moment. “Yeah! The four of us can take him down, grab his car keys, and that car is ours!”
With his boss’s order given, what was there for Ace to hesitate about? Even in the apocalypse, years of obedience were hard to shake. His brain barely processed it before his body moved on instinct. He reached for Ray.
One punch sent him stumbling backward.
He crashed to the floor on his ass, his face draining of color as the air was knocked clean out of his lungs.
Ray turned his gaze to Ace’s wife. “That kid’s Shane’s, isn’t he?”
What?!

All four adults changed expression at once. Shane and Ace’s wife stiffened in panic; Ace and Alina stared in disbelief.
“Think carefully before you answer,” Ray said, pulling a handgun from his pocket and tapping it lightly.
The gun was unloaded, but did that make any difference to Ray? If he wanted bullets, he could produce as many as he pleased. The empty chamber was simply a safety precaution. Intimidation was all he needed.
Ace’s wife’s face went deathly pale. For a moment, she couldn’t even speak.
Ray wasn’t in a hurry. His goal for today was already accomplished. Everything from here on out was just entertainment.
“Let’s start simple,” he said casually. “What’s your name?”
“C–Catherine,” Ace’s wife answered. This time, she didn’t hesitate.
Ray nodded. “How did you and Ace meet?”
She hesitated again, then answered after a few seconds, “We worked at the same company.”
Ray smiled. “So you already knew Shane back then?”
Catherine forced a smile. “I was the front–desk receptionist at Shane’s company. Of course I knew him.”
“Then tell me,” Ray asked suddenly, “did he seduce you into bed–or did you go to him on your own?”
He abruptly pointed the gun at her and barked, “Lie to me, and I’ll blow your head off!”
“It was me! It was me!” Catherine panicked, her mind going blank. The truth spilled out before she could stop herself.
Silence fell over the room.
Ray glanced at Ace, then at Alina, and smiled. “I’ll ask again. Is that child Shane’s?”
The words had barely left Catherine’s mouth before she regretted them. She shook her head frantically. “No! I never slept with Shane! You scared me with the gun–I just blurted out a lie!”
Ray scratched his ear, then pointed the gun at Shane, then at the child. “Everyone take a good look. Do these two look alike?”
Shane had a sharp, narrow face. Ace’s was broad and square. And the boy? There wasn’t a trace of Ace in him.
Ace trembled as he studied the child closely.
Did they look alike? No. Not at all.
He’d never doubted it before–but now, the harder he looked, the clearer it became. The boy didn’t resemble him in the slightest. Instead, he looked disturbingly similar to Shane.
Questions flooded his mind.
Why would Catherine have chosen him? She might have only been a receptionist–but what was he? No looks, no money, just brute strength. Why him?
Had she already been pregnant with Shane’s child and simply needed someone to take the fall?
Shane was always dropping by, and Ace had felt honored by the attention. Looking back now, it was pathetic and laughable.
“Shane, you bastard!” Ace roared, tears streaming down his face as he lunged at him.
The two men instantly grappled, crashing into each other.
Watching the former “boss and servant” turn on one another, Ray smiled. His expectations hadn’t been wasted after all.
Catherine rushed forward, trying to pull Ace away. “Honey, don’t listen to his lies! Shane and I are completely innocent!”
Chapter 230
“Innocent my ass!” Ace bellowed, slapping her hard across the face and knocking her aside.
With one hand pinning Shane down, he began raining slap after slap onto the latter’s face.
“Bastard! I’ll beat you to death!”
