On the night of May 31st, Ray tossed and turned, unable to sleep. Curled up beside him was a mutt.
He’d found the stray near his warehouse.
At first, the dog would sneak bites of his food. In the end, Ray simply started feeding it. Little by little, the dog let down its guard. By the third day before the disaster, it had come to rely on him completely and followed him home.
Ray believed that after the catastrophe, people would be less reliable than animals. So he would rather adopt a dog.
Tomorrow, the apocalypse would arrive.
He felt like a woman nine months pregnant, waiting for the moment of birth–excited, tense, and unable to calm down.
What if, after being reborn, the apocalypse didn’t come at all?
He wavered between hope and fear. He didn’t know how much time had passed before he finally fell asleep.
A night went by, and a new day arrived.
Ray ate breakfast, but the food tasted like nothing.
The closer it got to nine o’clock, the more nervous he became.
8:00 am.
8:30 am.
8:50 am.
The clock hit 9:00 am.
Ray sat by the window and looked up at the sky.
No hail fell.
He froze.
Could it be that after his rebirth, the natural disaster really wasn’t coming?
That would be ridiculous.
But even if it didn’t come, it didn’t matter. The supplies he’d prepared were enough to last him for hundreds of lifetimes, and he also had the otherworldly storage space. He could still make something of himself.
Bang!
A heavy impact suddenly sounded against the glass.
Ray jerked and looked outside.

On the ground lay a hailstone the size of a fist.
This wasn’t some prank made in a kid’s freezer, because the hailstone was dark green.
Hail.
Ray’s heart tightened–then he let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding.
The apocalypse had arrived, right on time.
Bang!
Another hailstone crashed down, this time onto the roof, making a sound like metal slamming into metal. The sky, which had been clear, rapidly darkened, and mist began to rise.
Ray smiled.
The entire villa had been reinforced. Not to mention fist–sized hail–even hail the size of a head wouldn’t be a problem.
And the glass wasn’t ordinary glass. It was specially reinforced glass. Even if you hammered it with a sledgehammer, it would take hundreds of hits just to crack it, let alone shatter it. And if needed, he could raise the steel plates, turning the place into a true fortress.
The hail wasn’t falling very fast, but getting hit by one of those was no joke. If one hit your head directly, it could crack your skull open.
The whole neighborhood erupted into chaos.
People walking outside got struck and immediately started wailing in pain. Cars and electric scooters, smashed by the heavy hail, blared piercing alarms.
Even though Ray had shut the doors and windows, the indoor temperature display visibly began to drop.
This year had been hot. By the end of May, temperatures had already passed 30°C. People who hated the heat had to sleep with the air conditioner on at night.
But now? The temperature plunged from 32°C, quickly dropping below 20°C.
In just one hour, the indoor temperature fell to 15°C.
Everyone had been wearing short sleeves. Now, they had to dig out their sweaters.
And by noon, the indoor temperature had actually dropped to 5°C.
Ray had already lit the fireplace and thrown in a pile of firewood. The indoor temperature quickly climbed back into the twenties, warm like spring, even a little hot,
So he let some cool air in.
Partly because it was too warm, and partly because it was dry–he needed some moist, cool air to bring down the dryness.
At last, his villa was comfortable.

Several messages came in on his phone.
Ray glanced at them. They were from Lucy and Keisha. Both were shocked by the sudden hailstorm. Luckily, they’d been indoors when it started.
Ray chatted casually with them for a bit, and then everyone went about their own business.
Ray turned on the TV.
In his previous life, he had never been this relaxed. After the disasters began, he had spent all his time taking
care of his fake son–cooking, washing clothes, running himself ragged.
