Chapter 48
He added the caption: [Thank goodness I’m a homebody who prepped. Stocked up just in time. LOL.)
He’d already checked his ex–wife hadn’t blocked him. More likely, she was keeping tabs on him through social media, so she’d definitely see this.
After lunch, he headed down to the garage to walk the dog.
There were still plenty of people around today, but the mood was much heavier than yesterday’s nervous bustle. A shared, hard–to–conceal worry hung in the air, especially among those whose family members had gone to work and hadn’t returned. They were terrified their loved ones had nothing to eat and no way to stay warm.
The outside temperature had already dropped to 23 degrees Fahrenheit. Every household had their heat cranked up; otherwise, they’d be huddled under layers of blankets, shivering.
But by the day after tomorrow, the power would be cut, and the temperature would plunge to near zero. Then, the real despair would set in.
After the walk, Ray returned home.
The disaster response group chat wasn’t as lively as before. People had gotten practical and started bartering, selling whatever supplies they had, but prices had skyrocketed at least tenfold. They were being cursed out for profiteering off a crisis, for gouging their own neighbors.
Ray shook his head with a quiet chuckle. Right now, anyone paying ten or even twenty times the normal price was being called a fool, but in a couple of days, it would be the sellers who’d be sick with regret.
What good was money then? Utterly useless.
So, being able to buy supplies with cash right now was basically like getting them for free.
He scrolled through the group and found Honey’s profile, and sent her a friend request.
As expected, it was rejected immediately.
Ray didn’t send another. He just smiled.
That request was just a little nudge for Honey. Next, he posted a photo in the group: ten cases of instant noodles and twenty crates of bottled water.
Instantly, not only was he bombarded with @mentions in the group, but his friend requests also flooded in.
Ray ignored them all. He was showing off, that’s all.
Meanwhile…
Lauren had, of course, seen Ray’s post. When she saw that mountain of food, she practically drooled. And seeing a dog gnawing on a steak made her want to strangle Ray with her bare hands.
Such waste. Criminal waste.
What had she eaten these past two days?
1/2
Plain rice and canned food.
Now even a mutt was eating better than she was.
And when she saw Ray post another “flex” in the group chat, she was so furious she nearly exploded.
That food should have been hers. How dare he flaunt it in front of everyone, making them all covet it?
No, she had to change her approach. She needed to start sucking up to Ray again.
Before, she’d done it for money. Now?
She wanted both the money and the supplies.
“Lauren! Lauren! You worthless girl, get out here right now!” Josh hammered on her door and bellowed.
Lauren’s face darkened. They’d already fought all night yesterday, and he still wouldn’t leave her alone today?
