Chapter 51
Day Three of the Crisis.
Ray woke up on his own. He brushed his teeth, washed his face, pulled a serving of breakfast from his storage, and gave Leo two large meat–filled buns.
He couldn’t feed the dog steak every day. Nutrition had to be balanced.
Leo had been a stray for a long time and had developed the good habit of not being picky. In fact, just being full was a luxury to him. So whether it was steak or meat buns, he ate with pure relish.
Watching him devour his food made Ray hungry too. He quickly finished a bowl of oatmeal with berries and nuts.
Then he drank some milk. Leo got some as well. The dog wasn’t fully grown yet–more milk would help him get stronger.
Finally, Ray polished off breakfast with a plate of fresh fruit.
Only then did he open the group chat.
It was overflowing with negativity.
It was already the third day, yet the hail hadn’t stopped, the thick fog hadn’t lifted, and there was still no sign of government aid. Everyone was convinced they were just sitting ducks, running out of both water and food.
For now, people were only complaining.
But in a couple more days… they’d start looting.
Good neighbors, close relatives–none of it would matter. When people were starving and dying of thirst, they’d rob anyone.
Humanity can be stripped away in a single thought.
Ray got a message.
He glanced at it. It was from Lauren.
He wasn’t surprised. After his little “show–off” post yesterday, he actually thought it was late for her to only be reaching out now.
Was Lauren trying to play hard to get?
Lauren: [Ray, can you give me another chance?]
Lauren: [Now that this crisis has hit, it might last a very, very long time, so I’m definitely not after your money. Please believe that I’m sincere, okay?]
After a moment, another message came through.
Lauren: [I’ll come see you tonight, okay?]
‘Here it comes. Ray sneered. ‘My vicious ex–wife, you think I don’t know what you’re planning?‘

Ray: [I’ll think about it.]

Over at the Gantt residence, when Lauren saw Ray’s reply, a cold smirk curled her lips. “He took the bait.”
Josh let out a heavy grunt. “That bastard dared to humiliate me in public. This time, we’ll see who gets the last laugh!”
Max cracked his knuckles, his face eager.
Lauren nodded. “Everything goes according to plan. I’ll trick him into opening the door. Dad and Max, you rush in and subdue Ray immediately!”
Diane looked anxious. “What if the crisis ends and Ray goes to the police?”
Lauren showed no concern at all. “Given how things are now, this disaster definitely won’t end anytime soon. A lot of people are going to die. Plenty will do the same things we’re about to.
“When everyone’s guilty, no one gets punished. And besides, if Ray is dead, how exactly is he supposed to call the police?”
Kill him?
Even old man Josh trembled. He hadn’t expected his daughter to say something so ruthless.
