Chapter 71
Larry started picking the lock.
He really was a professional. It took him barely thirty seconds to get it open.
The only reason he couldn’t get Ray’s lock open before was because Ray had spent eight million on renovations, with a single requirement: absolute solidity, impossible to destroy. If a door like that could be popped open by an ordinary locksmith in a couple of moves, then even if hail were falling from the sky, Ray would still hunt down Noel and kill him.
The moment the lock gave way, six people rushed inside.
“Who’s there?”
“Ah–what do you want?”
“It’s Moe!”
“That’s Larry the locksmith!”
“And you–Troy!”
The four members of the Gantt family cried out in shock, but the shouts quickly dissolved into screams of terror.
Ray smiled faintly and turned away.
This was definitely not the end, unless someone in the Gantt family chose to kill themselves.
But as long as there was even the slightest way to survive, would people like the Gantts really do that?
So he would probably get to torment his ex–wife’s family a few more times yet.
Ray went home and slept beautifully.
Leo tried to climb onto the bed to sleep with him, but Ray kicked it off, laughing as he scolded, “Even if you were female, you’re still not allowed on my bed. Once the heavy fog clears, I’ll see if I can find you a girlfriend.”
Leo barked at him twice. It was hard to tell whether it was protesting or urging Ray to hurry up and take action so it could escape the ranks of the perpetually single.
The night passed.
By morning, the entire neighborhood was buzzing with talk of what had happened to the Gantt family.
Just last night, Moe had led a group of people who pried open the Gantts‘ door and stormed in, and it seemed all four members of the family had been violated.
Why four?
Because all four of them had been screaming–stopping for a while, then starting again. It was enough to make anyone’s eyes pop.

It could be understood if they’d done it to Lauren–she was young, after all, and decent–looking, But Daisy was already so old. And Moe’s group still went after her?
Sick. Absolutely sick.
But the most perverse part was that they hadn’t even spared Josh and his son.
Just thinking about it–how twisted did one have to be?
That’s what Kelly from Unit 402 said. She hadn’t seen it with her own eyes, but she’d heard everything clearly. Not only did she talk about it nonstop in the group chat, she went straight to the parking garage first thing the next morning and told anyone she ran into.
Was it terrifying? For sure.
But did any righteous hero step forward to say they’d help the Gantt family? No.
Everyone swept the snow from their own doorstep. Who had the energy to worry about frost on someone else’s roof?
Still, everyone became more cautious. The building community presidents went door to door, trying to unite all the residents. If something like what happened to the Gantts happened again, they’d band together to fight back. They couldn’t let themselves be picked off one by one.
That might work for a short while. But after a few more days–when people got a little hungrier, a little thirstier -many would start turning on the people in their own building first.
After all, people in the same building were at least familiar. If you targeted strangers without knowing how many people were in their home, you might break in only to have five burly men rush out and kill you instead.
So you always picked the softest target.
The Gantt family had simply become the sacrifice.
But did anyone feel sorry for them?
How could they?
Was there a single good person in the Gantt family?
Everyone knew what kind of people Josh and Daisy were. Max was a textbook scoundrel–eating, drinking, whoring, gambling, he did it all. Honest work? Please.
As for Lauren, she’d had no bad reputation before. But in the last three months, her image had completely collapsed.
First came the revelation that she was pregnant before marriage—and carrying her lover’s child. She had dumped the responsibility on an honest man. And the truly explosive piece of news was…
